The "Ask Nathan a Question" Thread

S78: I am also hoping for Nathan to chime in on your Q. My locale and terrain is also very similar to yours, not surprisingly though, as we are only 90 miles or so apart. I do have some more brush behind the property that the LC could be much more useful for because of its lighter weight, but I had primarily bought the LC because of its intended future service if I should move much further up North (Crescent City area) where they land is covered by thicker brush on steroids, thorneberry bushes, etc.

The BC is most likely going to be so limited and so competitive that I'm not holding my breath on landing one, unless I get to be so lucky of that Friday's sale. A heftier Carothers Chopper is very much needed to be added to my cutting/chopping tools and I hope that the MC will be filling that need

Yep that BC is one heck of a beast but I'm tempted to pass on it because it seems like it would be overkill for my needs.

Mr. Nathan,
I'm hoping to get some insight on which chopper of yours would best suit my area/needs.

I'm in Riverside CA and we have mostly hard woods like oak, walnut, sycamore and pine but very little vegetation to clear.

What chopper would you choose for yard work, wood processing and camping duty out of your lineup?

I thought I made my mind up when the Behemoth was announced, but that changed when you posted the specs of the Medium Chopper!

I don't really know, I haven't used a MC yet and I've only played with the BC a little. My guess is the MC would probably be a more versatile knife for most users, though the BC will certainly out perform it in pure chopping. I guess it depends on your "chainsaw" threshold... If you go get the saw out on stuff over 3" you'll get by fine with the smaller knife. If you're felling a bunch of 3"-6" trees you'll want the BC.

Thank you sir.
I doubt I'll be felling any large trees anytime soon so it looks like the MC will be the safest bet.
I'm sure it'll be able to out perform my old Junglas and GSO 10 as a firewood processor.
The 10 was great, but the hump on the top of the handle was a major hotspot.

It went through seasoned oak without any issues.

I'll try not to derail too much here bud, but I lived in Brookings OR for a short time. Long enough to know that Crescent City is nice. The Chetco River there out of Brookings is one of the most beautiful rivers anywhere IMO. Hope that works out for you if that's the (eventual) plan

Question for Nathan: Are the finalized model NASK slightly longer in blade length than (some of or all of) the prototypes? Trying to judge from some of the pictures. Thanks.

Mr.Nathan
May I ask if you made Damascus blade over 15''。I am in Canada, not sure where to buy one and what price is reasonable。I found a producer called grizzly blade。did you heard them before and how to you think about their work
Thank you

We tweaked a lot of things, but the blade length is one thing that hasn't changed.

I'm sorry, I'm not familiar with that company. No, we don't generally use Damascus.

Sorry if this has been asked before but do you have an idea on what the weight is going to be?
Not Nathan, but hope this helps (from the preorder first page)... I'm curious too if this will change

Here are the specs:

Delta 3V at HRC 60.5, .220" thick (half way between 3/16" and 1/4")
Total length 11.8"
Blade Length 6.5"
Weight 12.9 ounces
Edge angle 20 DPS
.020" edge before sharpening
Grippy 3D machined scales in micarta or TeroTuff
Black oxide treated 18-8 stainless steel fasteners
Hidden lanyard
Cheers,
C.

^ that 20 DPS was overlooked by me. I had automatically assumed that it was the typical Nathan's 18 DPS edge!

That A2 Shiv surprised me!

Unrelated story but I tried to get too cute with my Umnamzaan and freehand at what I perceived to be 17 DPS but I totally fooqued up and can't seem to find the darn apex! Hence as to why I ordered a KME to the rescue! I don't even want something which allows me to go 15 DPS like a W.E. System!

Mr. Nathan
Thank you for your reply。can you please give me any Damascus blade producer i can trust。and give a price estimation please?
thank you
I think it would be in Very poor form for one professional craftsman to quote a price for another professional craftsman without consulting them prior.

Nathan with your foray into a "blade sports legal" blade, I'm curious how you would design a knife for the same challenges but without the constraints on size and design. False edges? Funky grinds? Longer and leaner?
