The "Ask Nathan a Question" Thread

Nathan with your foray into a "blade sports legal" blade, I'm curious how you would design a knife for the same challenges but without the constraints on size and design. False edges? Funky grinds? Longer and leaner?

Longer thinner blade. Longer multi grip handle. Same primary grind geometry but better weight distribution and greater cutting ability.

Nathan, know you have your plate full at the moment with the HDFK, BC, and MC, but have you given any thought to designing a New Knife (Basically a combat or fighting knife) in the 7 1/2 to 8 1/2 inch range to replace or augment the Shiv? Seems like your line-up and current offering's have all the other Blade length's covered! o_O:thumbsup:
Thanks in advance

What about a simple neck knife type of thing, something like a Becker BK11?

^^^ This :) . Simple and utilitarian! Though I may prefer OD2/PFS27 or a stainless such as Elmax for inside-the-shirt neck carry. Unless D3V can handle the long-term prospect of being held against a sweaty chest  for most of the day (I haven't tested D3V in such a fashion yet ). 5.5 up to 6.25 max OAL. A perfect transition piece for those moving from folders to fixed EDC. And the perfect discrete carry for everyone else

Any idea how many you'll make, and if there will be a preorder for them? Nathan the Machinist Nathan the Machinist

Probably a dozen or so prototypes. Then we'll have to decide if we want to produce them. There is a lot of hand grinding that goes into the prototypes which won't scale up. I'll need to decide if it makes sense to tool up to produce them in quantities. It's a big knife. It'll be big fixtures and low output, which might not make economic sense, it's something we need to determine and we don't have that data yet.

I was curious about what grit/finish Nathan finds the 4V EDC to suit his personal uses best?
400 grit, mirror polish?

How about the other 4V owners, what do you sharpen to, grit wise?

Only sharpened once so far. SPS II #1000. Will probably move down to the SPS II #3000 stone upon next resharpening. Still waiting on the SP #400 from Tools from Japan...
