The "Ask Nathan a Question" Thread

This still ANAQ thread?

Here is a Q Nathan: will the collab CPK, say of that UF variety, have some sort of Carothers name stamp? I assume that you are very guarded about the signature Carothers but will there be a simple CPK or something familiar on the collab blade, similar to Lorien's LA on that Böker Roundhouse folder collaboration in D2?

I'm thinking just the name "Carothers" printed in Copperplate Gothic

Probably. It's a great knife. I'm sure we will revisit the pattern again in the future.

It looks like Boker will be doing a run of them next year.
Congratulations. I think that Boker doing a run would be a very good thing. But suspect that some of the people who buy the Boker/CPK will then be searching for the real CPK.

I believe there is a Boker/Tom Krein PSK and also a Boker/Tom Krein mini bowie, as well as another one I think.

Doesn't Boker make knives of several different qualities in several different countries (Germany, USA, China)? I wonder which quality level (and country of manufacture, and price) they would aim for?

Their German lines are generally considered the highest quality Bokers. They also make some models in Argentina that are quite nice production blades as well.

I have one of their Argentine 5" kitchen knives. Takes and holds a decent edge, considering it's simple 440 steel. Plus, my wife doesn't have to worry about getting in trouble if and when she chips or rolls an edge. That's what she keeps me around to take care of.

Forgot that they also had kitchen knives made in Argentina. I was thinking of their 'Arbolito' outdoor knives, most of which seem to be Bohler N695 these days. Pretty good execution for the price, from what I've seen.

I'm not very familiar with what Boker's US production facilities are capable of, but I'd be curious to learn more - maybe Nathan knows?

... if you could have a Utility Fighter that has all of the geometry and balance right and in a good serviceable steel, at a price point that you could justify a few to keep in your glove box etc, doesn't that sound pretty reasonable? It will be good for the brand because it will help expand our audience into areas where people really have no other mechanism to have heard of us. ...and I have some college tuition coming up.
You know you do have a bit more demand than your current sales are meeting, you could always throw a few more blades on the website and email people like me when they're available 😁😁

Hi Nathan, Will the Boker foray free up time to focus on things like the Folder, and other future white board models? I am anxiously waiting for the folder to release.
Nathan and I were on the phone when you posted this. He wanted me to let you know that yes, giving Boker permission to copy one of his patterns has basically taken everything off his plate at the shop. All the machine centers will be sitting idle, the heat treat development of new steels will be done by the little German shop fairies he is getting as part of his compensation for the deal, all the work he does for other makers will now be done by those makers themselves because they won't be able to afford Nathan's skills anymore with that gold leaf Boker lederhosen he is being fitted for. So, everything on the white board, past, present and future, Shiv 2s, K20s, Khuks, folders and a bunch of shit he hasn't even thought of and we've never heard of, will all be completed in two weeks. After that, he plans to pour diesel over everything and burn it all to the ground as there will be nothing left for him to do in two weeks.

Do you know if he gets to keep the faeries for life? Or just for the time they are producing the collab knife?

I was thinking along the lines of lead/mythical creature stomach acid wash knives. And how we haven’t seen any grey zombie turd knives in a while. Maybe Nathan’s supply of mythical creatures has been low, and if there are enough faeries that a few could go missing…
It could be a boon for anybody that likes those ugly rare knives.
