The "Ask Nathan a Question" Thread

Do you have any interest in working with and/or optimizing 10V class steels?

I'm loving this family of steels for EDC use. 65 HRC, high strength, lots of wear resistance, sufficient toughness; there's a lot to like. It'd be cool to see that kind of steel combined with CPK design language, but I don't know whether there's any performance to be gained by Deltafying it.

It's a good question

Do my surprise, the tweaks that have evolved into the Delta protocol that started with D2 and have been applied to 3V and 4V did not give the results we were looking for with Magna cut which is why we don't call it Delta Magna cut.

I do need to do some more investigating into 10V, you are right.

What are you selling on Friday?
Oh

For you knuckleheads that need to get your adrenaline fix on a Friday sale, but I have nothing ready for this Friday's sale, I present to you

A half of a nail

A half of a bolt

A half of a chain link (unleaded)

^ all from this last video:

And a half of a bottle of Nate's high concentration 1 micron sprayable diamond shmoo for your strop. It is an alcohol-based gell emulsion so it will stick to your strop even if you have been using a shitty wax base compound. Don't rub it in, just mist it and let it dry. Shake well before use and keep the cap on it to reduce clogging the orifice.

The cost is $0.00.

Free shipping.

The winner gets All of this useless trash, the best diamond schmoo I've ever used, and the respect and admiration of all the knuckleheads that failed.

The sale will post at 3:00 here on the CPK sub forum

I'm actually going to have to make a try at this. Genuinely curious to see how much better Nate's proprietary strop shmoo is vs DMT's diamond lapping paste offerings.

For folks who might've missed my post:

You can make your own balsa wood strop by going to a home improvement store (I went to the nearby Menard's), and buying a 3" x 1" finished pine board (nice and smooth. Was 48" long? Just cut to length), and 1/8" x 3" x 36" Craft Balsa Wood.

Just glue the balsa to the pine and cut to length (I just made 3 ~3" x 12" strops), then load with your paste of choice. Balsa has just a little give. Less than leather (or a mousepad, which folks have used/tried), but more than standard wood or anything harder.

My diamond shmoo does not get sticky when it dries, it has no propylene glycol, oil, or other gunk. When it's dry it is friable and sharp and it does not load up or leave a sticky gooey mess on your blades. It has a high diamond concentration and it gets the job done very quickly. There are all kinds of pastes and sprays I have tried in the past and I've thrown them away.

Well, Nathan, if you decide not to market your diamond shmoo...I can recommend the shmoo from NORTHWEST_KNIFE_GUY NORTHWEST_KNIFE_GUY

I have the 1 micron version which I use on one of his basswood strops, (bare kangaroo leather on the other side). And he's a site supporter, so bonus points there as well.

Here too, NORTHWEST_KNIFE_GUY NORTHWEST_KNIFE_GUY , I can recommend 100% his 1micron Diamond Spray too. Added bonus, he packs his shipments just as sturdy and secure as CPK does.

I've heard good things about gunny juice emulsion. Anyone else have experience with it. Not a strop guy but am willing to branch out.
I use it!

I love the 6 micron ..I use that on a basswood strop

I usually don't fall for hype so I tried it and actually like it a lot!

Will pick up some more 6 and 3 , but I like the 1 micron from northwest

400 grit venev some straight to 6 micron gunny and done

(S110v manix 2)

Nathan, what is the sweet spot on your choppers that will deliver the most effective blow? For my personal application I’m curious about the BC, MC and K18. If it’s not too time consuming what makes it the sweet spot? Is it momentum, distribution of weight or something else entirely?

Thanks,

Kevin
