The "Ask Nathan a Question" Thread

Hey Nathan!

I was wondering if it’s true that y’all do your heat treat with Peters ? There’s a recent post in the Survive Hall of Shame where a member mentioned that CPK uses Peters for your heat treat but from what I understand and from what I’ve read the delta protocol for your 3V is proprietary.

Thank you for your time and I hope y’all are having fun on vacation 🤓.

#notnathan obviously..

It's common knowledge that Delta 3V is/was proprietary to CPK, Dan Keffeler and S!K. Unfortunately, S!K moved away from the Delta 3V heat treatment in their recent runs.

Here is some information from Nathan himself:

Cheers

Just because Peters does their heat treat, it doesn't mean anyone can use the Delta protocol 😉.

We have several heat treat ovens here and a good cryo setup and we do our own heat treat when doing a prototype or a small batch and when doing development work.

I developed the Delta protocol to maximize edge stability in CPM 3V in order to improve edge retention.

We attempted the Delta protocol at three commercial heat treaters, Peter's being the only one that specializes in knives.

It took several attempts and modifications to their machinery and process to duplicate it, but their Delta heat treat is as good as my own and I use them for production so that we can focus on the other aspects of knife manufacturing.

I am not using a "Peter's heat treat". When running my knives, Peters is using my heat treat, on their machinery. It's more efficient this way.

Sad news today. I was notified this morning that my dream of procuring my next CPK knife in ECAM were dashed🥹

Past pre-orders, which were all before my time here on BF, have offered a rather nice variety and some spicy options not available for Friday sales. Nathan the Machinist Nathan the Machinist , will there be new handle material options and are you sourcing any more electic materials? And I'm not talking about that funky crusty Merita bread stuff you've been collecting at the park in your down time 😆

That wonderful edge cut antique Micarta comes from some machined bearing stock that is almost certainly Westinghouse although I do not have material certs for it.

I bought all of it they had but it's half gone now.

I acquired a few tons of some old International Paper Micarta. International Paper bought the brand, the machinery, and the manufacturing process when Westinghouse sold out. It's maybe not exactly the same thing but it's pretty close. It is certainly good material. I like it. And it's much more affordable than genuine Westinghouse. We will be offering that on knives in some future runs.

Also, I've decided I'm going to do a Basic Five pre-order. I see all the flippers out there.

I need to get the last of these DEK pre-orders out and then we're going to do the basic five & FK3. Probably pretty soon.

As I stated in another post, I can think of no better compliment for a knife maker than to have someone get up every morning and put the makers knife in their pocket. It truly becomes “their” knife.
Your EDC’s are highly coveted and rarely seen for sale. I would humbly ask that you consider adding those to your basic pre-orders. I see several signature lines & WTB looking for one and that of course includes mine🤷‍♂️

Half gone which means half is left 🙏 🙏

dialton dialton , I concur with you on the need for another EDC run. Nathan mentioned in the EDC3 thread that there will be a future EDC1.1 run. Hopefully with an ECAM and paper micarta option :p

^^^ just FYI, there was a poll last year for the next pre-orders, and if I remember right, the Shiv came out top, followed by the EDC.

On a side-note, I am amazed at CPK’s capacity ... the two swords, the Dek 1-3, now the Shiv, all in little more than a year or so (?). And the CW BFK as a side run (in addition to others I understand). Amazing.

Not to mention that they ask, listen and are heavily involved in what goes on here in this sub forum with their customer base. Amazing from my experience here (on this website) for the last 15+ years. Even on vacation!
It must be exhausting
