The "Ask Nathan a Question" Thread

Do you ever see making a scandi grind ā€œbuschcraftā€ type knife? And if not, why? The lack of is the only thing keeping me from having nothing but CPKs in my knife drawer.

I don't see us ever making a scandi. I make things that I personally would use and enjoy and I don't personally like scandi grinds. While this is a personal preference, sticking to what I know assures that I'm making things that I fully understand.

I know what a scandi grind is, but no idea what, if any, supposed benefit it provides over other grinds. What can it do that can't be done with your existing CPKs, or other CPKs you may not have yet?

I wouldn't mind something thinner and slicier for every day tasks. Realistically, the chances of me batoning wood, chopping trees, using the knife as a prybar etc are low. I need something for processing game, food prep, cutting rope etc.

joke answer: survive joe x abuse even if it's made out of n690

real answer: besides more material in the blade, some people find scandi / zero grinds easier to sharpen (because you literally just tilt the bevel flat on a stone and scrub). some others prefer it for woodcarving.

My question is about the Friday sale process and info and since Nathan runs the sales, I figured this would be a good place to ask about it. Really anyone’s answer works for me.
Having never participated in a Friday sale fury (only a presale), is the information about what is coming up for said sale posted a few hours or days prior to the actual live sale so that we can view a photo of a finished example of the knife, get information about any design updates, tweaks or changes from the previous model if it is a newly named version of a previous model (like the new EDC coming up) as well as scale options and prices? There is obviously no time to look through the sale thread when it goes live.
I looked at the last Friday sale thread but wasn’t able to determine the sequence of events and timelines. I have dug back and seen the unfinished blanks on the table but not a finished knife. I realize I might have missed it.
Thanks

#notnathan information on the next sale is always posted in the helpfully named "The NEXT SALE" thread that is stickied in this subforum. Nathan usually announces what model and how many he will have available in addition to the time of the sale (which is, for a normal Friday sale, always 3 p.m. Eastern). For a new or updated model, there are usually not pictures available ahead of time. Handle options can be asked about in this thread or in the ask ninJO thread, as Jo does the handles, but typically anything out of the ordinary is announced, e.g. I believe I saw there is no ECAM for the new EDC at this time, and that currently D3V is the only steel for Friday, but MagnaCut will be available at some point in the future. Otherwise you can talk to Jo after the sale to discuss handle options, and there are a couple of threads that have very detailed photos with all the current handle options in both buffed and unbuffed variants. Intermittently one or more of them may not be available, or may not be available for that model.

In my view, the steeper thicker primaries don't cut as well and the 13 DPS edge is fragile, and that giant edge bevel takes forever to resharpen with an abrasion resistant modern steel. I understand it has its purposes, but it does not appeal to me.

I find that scandi knives are much easier to control, and coincidentally safer to use when cutting notches and other fine wood carving tasks used in bushcraft.

I've tried just about every CPK, including the Kephart, and while they are obviously great knives, they wouldn't be my first choice for that kind of work.

Everyone has different tastes, and I admit scandi knives aren't the most versatile.

They cut wood just fine, especially that Kephart, they just can also skin, prep, slice, and do all kinds of things a scandi can’t.

And yet the Finns, Swedes, Norwegians and SƔmi have managed to survive and even thrive. (Just bustin' 'em.)

(I'll admit to liking Scandi blades...Scandilous, (sic), as it may be. And will also admit that perhaps they aren't the best choice for every endeavor. )

Nah, I agree with you to an extent. There is nothing more synonymous with bushcraft than a Scandinavian edge. That said, I (like Nathan) just don’t like them. I am probably more of an outdoor generalist than a bushcrafter, so I like something a little more well rounded.

And I shouldn’t have said they ā€œcan’tā€ just not as well as more utility oriented blades.

Not the best choice, but doable, just as a non-scandi blade is doable for use on wood.

I saw a post on FB where someone used a custom Reese Bose wharncliffe to skin and process a squirrel or a rabbit. No thank you!
