The "Ask Nathan a Question" Thread

For those that have done preorders do you pay right away or what. I don’t know.
Per the machinist -
You probably shouldn't even order a knife in this pre-order unless you're wanting a special configuration. Pre-orders are a bad idea in general. I recommend you just wait for the normal sales which will probably start around the end of the year.

If you place an order in this thread I'm only committing to ship before the end of next year.

If you send multiple emails to Jo asking "where's my knife, where's my knife!!!" before the end of next summer I will personally put a booger in the box when we ship it.

Please read and understand the knife and the ordering process before ordering. I will post some disclaimers in a second post after this one. Please do not order anything until you have read those disclaimers and contemplated how they apply to you. If you're international and your knife is lost or confiscated by customs, I'm sorry but there is nothing that I can do about that and the risk for this falls on you, the buyer. If that doesn't work for you, please do not get in on this order.
Here is the order process:

I'm going to take full payment non-refundable in advance. Once your order is confirmed there are no refunds, changes or cancellations other than accommodations for change of address.

These will ship as they're finished in mostly the order that they are ordered in this thread. As I'm building them, half of them will go to this pre-order and the other half will be sold in regular sales. This means you will see knives being sold while you're waiting for yours.

If you're ordering a knife in this pre-order: post in this thread first and then send an email to Jo at jocarothers (at) gmail (dot) com with this subject line: "Basic5 preorder" and include your post# in that subject line.

Please include the following information in your email:

1: Your post number on this pre-order thread.

2: Bladeforums name. (for example "Jo the Machinist")

3: Real Name.

4: PayPal email address so we can send a paypal invoice (or ask about other payment options)

5: Shipping address.

Once we receive this information, if everything is there, Jo will send you a PayPal invoice. If information is missing or you have additional questions, Jo will reply to your email. When your email is read and processed we will send you a reply letting you know we've received your information.

Please pay your paypal invoice within one month, otherwise we will need to cancel your order.

Jo, Bo, Mark, Ben, Tanto and I appreciate all of your continued interest in our work and your support.

Thanks for looking.

Yes, we take full payment upfront. This helps simplify the process for us. We're really not organized in a good way for managing orders of this nature. We are a machine shop.

We get the order, we get the money, we write the name and address and the order details on a build list, and we just go through the list putting the knives in the boxes and shipping them.

Sometimes it can take years.

A much better process would be to take a deposit and reach back out to that customer later to take the balance when we're ready to ship. If anybody would like to come here and do that for us, we can modify the process. But for now, we are machine shop full of filthy machinists, we take full payment in advance.

It is a terrible terrible system. I really don't recommend it, lots of other makers have used and abused this type of model, it's way better to just buy the knives on the Friday sales, but a lot of people don't like buying knives on the Friday sales and have asked for a pre-order and so we can accommodate them this way, but it's really a terrible business model.

Thanks for the reply. There is a maker out of TX that I buy a lot from and most of his are money up front. If you place an order (on certain models only) it is a 10 month wait and you have to put at least 50% down. I have 3 on order now. He is a one man shop so it takes time. I have zero problem paying up front. If I don’t trust a company than I don’t want their product. Thanks Nathan for attempting to get your blades in everyone’s hands.

Nice! I would be looking for one ECAM with satin grind Magnacut, to add to my older 3V and 4V acid wash EDC's

Any pictures of EDC’s with the acid wash and satin grind options?
#NOTNATHAN but I think he said he wasn't doing fancy options on this preorder, and I've been wondering what options won't be available.

We will have Magnacut and ECAM and acid wash and satin grind.

We will not have penetrator points, double edged, double edge point, lengthwise satin, or wood.

Actually Nate did say he was doing acid wash and satin grinds. He also listed what he was not making as well. :)

I'm not planning to set up to machine a swedge so if there is a swedge option it's going to be completely hand ground by Mark, one at a time, and not worth the money. So you probably don't want that.

So fullers and tapered tangs are still on the table?🤪
