The "Ask Nathan a Question" Thread

#notnathan, but pretty sure the scales are different across each of those.

The FK3 and BFK scales are the same.

FK2 scales and FK3/BFK scales are interchangeable and can be used on any FK2, FK3 and BFK.

FK3/BFK scales don’t have a cutout for the hidden lanyard hole found on FK2 knives (the FK3 and BFK do not have lanyard holes).

Also, FK2 scales are more contoured than FK3/BFK scales.

And if you have a little OCD, and want to use FK2 scales on a BFK/FK3, you have to patch the lanyard holes, of course :)

And - I forgot - the FK[1] scales are unique and incompatible.

If I would like to purchase a Carothers knife, but do not have any sort of platform membership, is there anything specific I would need to do (assuming I reply fast enough to the sale thread to qualify for purchasing)? I read somewhere that I may need to email Jo.

I apologize if this is not the right place to ask this question! I’m new to the platform and am trying to figure it all out.

Welcome aboard! 👍
Yep, you're right on in what to do. But, for $10 you can get a Basic membership and be able to get Direct Messages (DM), which is definitely worth it imo.

Thanks! I’ve definitely been considering that. I’ll probably end up doing that, especially as I get more into the platform. However, in the mean time, do you know what email would be good to reach Jo? Or where I could find that? Thanks again for your help.

You can purchase CPKs at the Friday sales which are announced in advance...whether in the main sale area of the Exchange or the few that are presented in this sub-forum.

You won't need to email Jo until you have been fortunate enough to get in under the gun with your post in the sale thread. The sale thread will provide instructions and particulars as to what you need to do to secure your purchase and any upgrades.

You can also find knives for sale in the CPK Sale area of the Exchange. (Again, be quick but do your due diligence.)

Any questions regarding the knives, etc, are best posted in this sub-forum so that Nate and Jo can busy themselves for the season like the very special elves that they are.

There is a sale today at 3:00 pm EST. Much of the time, it's difficult to buy a knife because many people respond quickly. Today will be different since Nathan is selling Field Knives which have been selling for some time. Therefore, you should definitely be able to buy one today if you're at this link at 3pm. You can email Jo directly after without a paid membership.

Appreciate the help from everybody. Think I managed to reply in time to get one. Also sent Jo an email.

Today, I went with the basic field knife in the tweaked 3V. I’ve watched some videos on this and read up a little, so I know it’ll be a great knife. However, I am curious about the difference between that and the “signature series” that was also offered today. I’ve looked around and can only find the “SDFK” signatures series. Anybody mind explaining the difference? I know there is the “field knife” plus the #2 and #3 of that series; but, still can’t find the “signature series” knives in the CPK encyclopedia.

Signature BFK/FK3 has a skeletonized tang, jimping, and a swedge. This results in the knife being lighter than the basic version and still balanced.
The makers mark is different and in a different location. Basic has block letter “Carothers” on the spine and the signature has signature “Carothers” on the ricasso.

Just an fyi, if you look under Hosted Knifemakers and click on Carothers- there is a nice ‘CPK encyclopedia’ for different models in case you are interested.

There are some really great folks here who will help you if they can. You will find out quickly that Jo is awesome and that the CPK knives are phenomenal.

What is your favorite historical sword design and why

"The katana! It's the ultimate sword!*

(*In feudal Japan)

The rapier.

Long and fast. I think it's the ultimate evolution of the sword. The only good way to realistically survive a sword fight against an opponent with a rapier is to also have a rapier.

Or a Glock

"Oh, if I were going against somebody with a rapier I would bring XYZ sword, it's so big he would not be able to parry it"

If your sword is heavy enough that a rapier can't stop it, it's heavy enough he can simply step out of the way but he will stab you in the brain, poke out both your eyes, and slit your throat before you ever got close to him regardless and you can't really effectively dodge a thrust from a rapier.

I know, before you fencing enthusiasts can say it, I am aware that there are better tools for combat sport. But, I think in real combat, going up against a real rapier with anything other than a rapier is suicidal.
