The "Ask Nathan a Question" Thread

Any plans to offer the hdfk in other handle materials? I'd really like to see one in the black & green linen.
I imagine G10 would probably be too heavy\mess with the balance on this pattern, I like the forest green as well.

Nathan, are you going to take a poll on the 12/29 preorder pattern or have you decided but waiting to make some exciting announcements soon.

If you think that this Q is going to put unnecessary pressure on you to say something, I wouldn't necessarily deny its devilish intent :)

P.S. a mere "Yes" or "No" are not answers, but perhaps "maybe!

Nathan,

In light of a certain unnamed someone with the patience of a Threenager hopped up on Halloween candy putting the gears to you about the next pre-order you don’t want to do and asked that we make it easy on you so you continue to do them, can you please lay out all the Friday sales for the first quarter of 2018?

Just dates and which pattern will be available, no need to be accurate to the exact amount that will be available.

Also, can I still get that HDFK engraved “Fluffer”?

Plzthxkbai!

^ not very nice of you to talk behind Tommy's back like that. Plus, wait your turn grasshopper as I have asked Nathan 3 questions yet to be answered:

1- what in his esteemed and expert opinion constitutes a "weapon" so far as blades are concerned?

2- what are the differences, if any, between the planned production model BC and the 15-20 of the prototype BCs (although not labeled as so) existing in the wild?

3- Um! I forgot :D

Lol...The cost of all the knives just went up to cover the new hire: planner/PR rep/web guy all-in-one.

BUT...schedules are awesome. My knife dollars maketh themselves wings. It's good to be able to plan as a customer.

I'm just hoping for a pre order for the UF..... want one so bad! I could finally use the most appropriate CPK for concealed carry....the scraper on my FK tends to jam into my side when I lean over :p . Never leave the house without it though! Balances out my trusty pea shooter on the other side nicely!

Nathan, has the sheath been finalized yet for the EDC 2? Is it being made by Eric@Mashed Cat? Thanks

Eric makes very good sheaths (one of the best in the industry) and we did evaluate him for this project, but given some functional and dimensional requirements for a small everyday carry fixed blade we found the best designs with Dozier. Our sheath offerings for the EDC2 will be similar to the EDC1 with a couple tweaks for increased long term durability and a different rivet. Incremental improvement rather than radical change. The Mashed Cat was very nice though. The print under a shirt, the distance it stuck out from the belt, the presentation to the hand and other small ergonomic considerations ended up being the deciding factors. Dozier has been designing sheaths for discrete comfortable carry of small knives for a long time and has it dialed in. They were close though.

Hi Nathan the Machinist Nathan the Machinist . Multiple questions, but all related to the ‘S’ bevel geometry on the HDFK.

Do all of the HDFK including the D2 have the complex bevel geometry?

Do any other models have this feature currently?

Are there any upcoming models that are planned to utilize this geometry?

Could you comment on the advantages this gives to the blade?

Yes

It is a very shallow and long drawn out S. We're developing this for the upcoming Bladesports competition cutter collaboration. This is the geometry found on the knife with three world championships on it.

I did not do the development work or evaluation but I can speculate that you get some of the reduced drag of a convex grind at the shoulders without the increase in width in the middle of the bevel. The goal would be less drag and less binding in things like a 2X4 cut, a rope cut and water bottles etc resulting is deeper penetration in the wood cuts and less pressure on the water bottles and rope.

Does it serve a real purpose on the HDFK? Probably not enough that anyone would notice because that knife is not normally used in these big dynamic cuts, but it doesn't hurt anything and it allows us to perfect the process. I'm going to try it on the EDC2 also, I'm hopeful it makes it a little more slicey with a little meat removed in the center of the bevel. With the same amount of steel supporting the edge and the same convex transitions at the shoulders it should cut about the same, but perhaps with a little less drag. We're going to evaluate it. I'm hoping the tweak is an incremental improvement.

We're also doing the C2 curvature continuous plunge transition on the new EDC2, similar to the plunge on the HDFK. It's a non-linear geometry where the rate of curvature does not make an instantaneous change at a discrete tangent transition but is instead a little more gradual. Again, not a revolutionary modification, just a minor tweak. We're able to do these things because some modern manufacturing technology has put a few more tools in the tool-kit, but I doubt anybody would even notice it, it's minor evolution.

Nathan, I like how you incorporate this kind of sciencey stuff and the fact that you're so passionate about advancing your craft. Just two more reasons why I'll do my best to get my hands on anything you produce! Thank you for the explanations, I've read through this thread twice! Great stuff!

Evaluating the EDC2 renderings and you mention the scales will be trimmed down a tad relative to the OG EDC. Was this the only dimension modified and will handle scales be interchangeable between the versions?

Yes they will swap

Nathan, if you keep not answering my question which I've asked you about 10 times already I reckon, I'm going to head on over to Moorseville to challenge you to armwrestling! The force will be on my side because I'll stop by at your local butcher to pick up a very nice and juicy piece of T-Bone for Sadie to be my back up just in case :)

So! What's going to be the difference between the past 15 or so "production" BCs and the upcoming production BCs. If I'd wager a guess, I'd say a sheath! Anything else Sir Nate? :)
