Just found the May/June '08 copy of The Backwoodsman magazine at Wally World of all places! I was sifting through the gun rags and noticed it in the back. This thing really packs some fun articles and info! Examples of info covered in this article:

-Air guns for survival
-The sling arrow
-Fire piston project
-Why not make a war club? (:D )
-Modern day possibles bag
-10 minute survival kit

...and more! I really am surprised at all the neat stuff they've got, right up my (our?) alley. If I end up liking the writing once I start reading, I think I'll start a subscription to this. On the surface at least, lots of good info.

I'm sure many here are already avid readers/long time subscribers, so have you all found it to be worth your while overall?

Charlie Richie's magazine, Backwoodsman, can be ordered over the internet as can back issues and a few good books he carries. You can also view a bit about the current issue. And three volumes of "The Best Of Backwoodsman" have been published.

Thanks for the reminder, Codger! I meant to ask others: who has those 'best of' volumes? Are they worth purchasing?

I don't have the "Best Of", but have been reading the magazine for many years (1980's, I think). I am not a regular subscriber myself, though I should be. I always find several articles of interest in each issue I pick up. And Charlie is a great guy to boot if you ever have reason to correspond with him. A lot of what is written here would fit right in with Backwoodsman. A lot of their travel and how-to articles are reader submitted.

yea,I love that mag....it's a every other month mag...I find 'em at my local HEB & Hastings...,along with others..one of my favs

I keep thinking I should subscribe to the Backwoodsman as I enjoy reading it. I usually have a hard time finding it on the magazine racks as they keep moving it around! Now they have it buried somewhere in the Men's area which is not a good place for a married man to be digging around in.

I always get Backwoodsman...great mag !!! I also save them all so I can put all my plans into action when I retire !!!!!

We are avid Backwoodsman readers. There is always a lot of useful and fun information in them for each of us... even tho GW and I do not always agree on what is fun and useful information. It is definitely worth your while.

i picked up an issue on a roadtrip a couple of summers ago, great mag. haven't picked up any subsequent issues, but i think i will in the future. great stuff, and i love the little tips and tricks tossed in between articles.

thanks for the post. I had missed that article on 10 minute survival kit. I hang on to all of mine and reread them from time to time.

Funny thing was that the author commented that he might not be able to get the buttstock open in an emergency. Several options come to mind. First, keep a screwdriver (small, maybe no handle or one of those offset screwdrivers) taped (electrical tape) to the sling in an out of the way location. Second, make an access hatch that doesn't need a screwdriver. Maybe seal it with duct tape or put a real hinge and some sort of latch or velcro on it. That is what I'm planning with my latest acquisition, a Rossi 22. You could also attach a swiss army knife or cheapo leatherman knockoff to the butt on the offside or on the sling.
