The Battle Mistress has ARRIVED!!!!!

I just sent in my order for a BM this week. I was not aware the blade was black. I don't care for black blades. The photo on Dr. Ron Hoods' survival site looked like bare steel, as on the Busse catalog site. Is that only for the Collector's Grade?

Does anyone who owns a Busse with the grooved handle also own one of the Ontario Spec Plus knives. They have a similar handle and I find it very abrasive. While I would assume that the grooves are very secure, are there any long term use issues regarding comfort with the Busse?

Hi Cliff,

While I have yet to use the BM for an extended period, I find the grip infinitely more comfortable than my Spec Plus 10" Tanto Grip. The Spec Plus, while a great blade for the price, tends to want to roll out of the hand due to the weight of the blade. Because of this tendancy, I experience some hand fatigue when using it. When I chopped through some 2X4s last night, there was little vibration and the knife stayed firmly in my grip upon impact with my beautiful Battlem Mistress. I was able to focus more on the chopping then the grip!

This isn't in as great a detail as you normally provide Cliff, but I hope this adds a little more fuel to the fire

I've done some light chopping yesterday with my Steel Heart while putzing around and taking the picture above. I found that the grooves are on the shallower side, and rounded enough to give a good grip while no sharper edges to chafe, irritate, or raise blisters. I keep a looser grip while chopping, probably a habit to keep excess shock from tiring my hands. I find that the grooves allow just a bit of up and down movement in my looser grip, enough to reduce any sort of shock. On the other hand, I haven't noticed any sort of fore-and-aft movement, like feeling as though the knife were going to slip out of my hand. The grooves seem to work for me so far. I haven't handled a Battle Mistress, so I'm not sure if the extra blade length or forward wieght would make a big difference, but I just wanted to toss this anecdotal, albeit non-empirical, evidence out for the record.

Thanks for the pic, Don. Nice grooves! Chris, not to worry, I sleep with my BM under my pillow, too.

Now if only Jerry would put G-10 handles on his knives instead of micarta. Hmmmm.

I kind of like the micarta... G10 seems awfully slippery when wet but I think it's a personal preference.
A Cetan from Rob Simonich should be arriving at my doorstep in the next few weeks. I'm going to see how I like it and then order a Badger Attack as a mid to small size fixed blade and companion piece to the BM. Do any of you fine folks own any of the smaller Busse knives?

Still on cloud nine about the BM (it's in my briefcase!)

Glad everyone likes the pic. I ran down this thread again, and thought to myself, Damn! that's a nice knife!

While I don't sleep with it under the pillow, does on the second shelf of the nightstand count?

Greg, regarding using G-10, that's an idea there. Of course, with the handle slabs being removable, someone ambitious could always fashion a pair of their own G-10 grip slabs for their Busse and swap them as desired or as their preference. Let's see now, where to get G-10...hmmm...what colors are available these days...

I had thought about a Badger Attack as well for a while, but I have a Rinaldi TKK in that size that I just love, and I wouldn't want to have to choose between the two. That of course leaves the Mean Street. Easier choice for a matching small blade.

The "Custom" page of the Edgeworks website has a custom double-Busse rig in kydex for a Steel Heart and a Mean Street that looks really cool. It might give you a good idea of the relative size difference and scale to see the two side-by-side, even though it's not a Battle Mistress.

Don, good idea! I ought to fish around for some G-10. Someone posted a source here once. I'll have to dig for it. BTW, here's Chris' Battle Mistress:

Awesome knife.
So long as the Mistress is within arm's reach, you're good to go.

"E" mentioned that the photo on my site is the satin finish on the the Busse... That's correct. The photo is of one of the prototype INFI blades that Jerry sent me for testing. We were interested in the performance with respect to rust and discoloration. After almost two years with the blade I can tell you that if you give the blade at least minimal care (wipe it with a marine cloth whenever you feel guilty), neither rust nor discoloration will be a significant issue.

Congratulations on your acquisition!

Ron

Thanks to all of you! I feel like I should be handing out cigars. I'm like a proud new father.

Best Regards,

Wow! I really like that new style sheath! I think I will try and get one for my Mistress. She needs a better outfit, and that will make the whole thing seem new again!

Verrrrry nice!

So they really do exist.
