The beginnings of a BK 5 tanto...DONE!

Albert, it's my b'day today, any updates or pics on my tanto,,, can't wait to hear!! or better yet see!!

Happy Birthday!

Can't show you any pictures of YOUR knife, but this is one I did back on June 5th, and should hold you over until you hear from Albert! :D I think I ground it a tad shorter than yours.

Albert got a hold of me a few days back,,,, says it should be done soon, waiting for him to post finished pics on here for all to see!!

Just curious about the final reveal. Will that be you or Albert? Just eager to know that's all.
Spoke to Albert once again today, scales are halfway done. He is a busy man, so I appreciate him taking on my project as I have no time. Some of you have asked, "why have a pure fighting knife created?",,, simple, because when I travel overseas for some of my work that is exactly what I need it for...

here's some pics of the scales as one is almost done so far...

Hopefully full product unveiling will be in a couple weeks...and the blade will be carried in a Spec Ops Master Combat Sheath...

i don't get tantos or why people would prefer them... esp given the perfection of a typical swept tip like on a katana for the Fisk :>

iirc from my early ninja days, when i was ... a teen ... tantos came about as an in field primitive method to get some life out of a broken blade. they're "stronger", but not as good for say, stabbing stuff (armor). might be more rugged for prying a bit, but you want prying, you choose your blade i guess :D the BK5 is a bit thin for that. imho.

now, what would make an excellent tip, perhaps, and KaBar has/had the know-how to license, is the Besh thingy. that just screams "hammer me into barrels" :)

I feel the same way, so I built the one in the photos above (since sold) just to see for myself. Certainly didn't change my mind any, but from the comments I got "tanto-ism" is a disease that not everybody gets. But those that do get a near-fatal dose.

So...much...awesome....hurts...

Well done! Should be done with the project tonight then on it's way back home. Pics to come soon...

All done! I am pretty happy with the end product to be honest. Even with the blade modification the knife feels quite lively in the hand and not out of balance. I would like to thank havoc1969 for being so patient and giving me such a cool project. You the man! Alright, on to the pictures!

And this is why you don't insert a tanto-fied, sharpened BK5 into it's sheath without handle scales to keep it from sliding around... :apologetic:

And of course, a highlight from Blade this year!

Wow, excited beyond words, and should be here just in time to be included in my kit... as you know Albert I am leaving overseas for contract work on the 24th, so I pray it makes it ontime... if I have some time I will give a field report on it,,, if not I will certainly do so when I get back!! Once again Sir, I appreciate your hard work and making my specs of a true combat blade become a reality...

Hi;

Pardon my ignorance, but why the Bk5 with this extensive mods ( awesome mod BTW!!!) and not the more combat oriented BK7. Having owned both though the Bk5 is much faster in the hands than the Bk7, I find the thickness of the BK7 more comforting than of the BK5. Will the tanto point of the Bk5 be an as effective stabber as intended compared to a Bk7 with a sharpened swedge.

I am taking into cognizance that the insurgents don't wear Kevlar/Body armour like the american/coalition forces or the Military Contractors ( I gather from the above posts that you are one. ) but still.

Thanks
Moin.

I'm happy you like it! I sent the package out Express so it should be there on Monday. I hope it comes on time! The pleasure was mine, I appreciate you sending me such a cool knife to work on. I finished the edge on leather so stropping will be one of the easiest forms of edge maintenance after light use. If under heavy use, touch up with whatever you have on hand, then strop. Good carbon steel always touched up quickly.

jmacdoug - When working on a finished knife one is forced to go slow and keep the steel cool while working, otherwise damaging the tempered steel becomes a serious risk. I actually use chilled water in my bucket and toss in a few ice cubes for good measure. Yes, I'm OCD. :)

Moin - different strokes for different folks. The BK7 is a true monster and a great knife but quite large. The thicker blade may make the knife stronger but that decreases it's penetration ability due to the larger width. Not to say a nasty hole is going to be a tall order... The BK5 is a lighter, slimmer knife making penetration easier not to mention cutting down on weight. I like thick blades, a lot...but for straight up fighting, a slimmer knife can have some serious advantages. It will be faster in the hand as well, less recovery time due to decreased stress on the wrist. A lot of it comes down to personal preference. Solution - get both. :)

Thank you for the photos. That is a really great job. I like tanto blades. I have one muela tanto blade and it is almost indestructible . I am learning every day new things in this forum. Thank you !

Thanks AlvarF! This is a great forum, as the saying goes "you learn something new every day". Much more fun when it's about knives. :)
