Will P. How did you break your Kabar?

I have a Kabar and don't ever see myself breaking it.

I like design of the kabar so much that if I ever did break it and wanted the same knife but tougher I'd probalby get the Marbles 7" Ideal from A.G.Russel. It's a beautiful knife!

I think the BK7 is a good replacement for a Kabar except the handle can get a little slippery.

Some best buys in the knife world are,

Buck 110 or 112
Any Opinel
Any knife from Frosts of Mora,
Mora 2000,
Any SAK
USMC Kabar
Camillus USMC knife (similar to Kabar)
Camillus Becker knives
Camillus and Ontario machetes
For chopping, any of the axes or hatchets from Gransfors Bruks

If it's digging/prying that broke your Kabar, I'd recommend a surplus East German folding shovel. They dig/pry like no knife ever will and cost only $12.00!

Spyderco is a great value for the under $100 price point. The Benchmade Griptillian series are another great sub $100 knives.

I fogot Kershaw Avalanche -

CPM S60V (440V) steel blade
G10 handle
Steel liners
and Speed Safe in addition
price ~80

Kershaw overall prices probably lower if you consider what kind of materials they use.

Thanks, Vassili.

Spyderoco: Native S30V has to be one of the best bargains on the planet - amazing blade steel, good construction, exemplary quality, for less than $50.

Benchmade Griptilians: another great knife, not as swanky in the steel department, but the D2 version is still available. I have 2 other axis lockers (710, 730), and the Grip is as smooth as any of them.

Camillus EDC: Great construction, very good blade steel, and a beautiful design.

Well, I don't really think it was the knife's fault. It was old, and I was chopping bushes with it, and those things have sort of minimal tangs. I don't do much chopping with my combat knife, so I am thinking a Nimravus would make a good replacement. I am split between the standard tip and the tanto - the tanto certainly looks more pointy. God willing, of course, I will never need to use it in combat, but things go wrong.

It's a strange world. I have used a folding knife in self-defense before, but despite a military career choice I am unlikely to use a fixed blade in combat.

If I were looking for a kabar replacement I would look at the Becker line by Camillus.

I am familiar with the line. The Combat Utility 7 is the sort of knife I am looking for, but with two important problems: Firstly, it is made out of high carbon steel. Coating or no, I would prefer a "compromise" steel like 154 CM or D2. The second problem is the sheath. IMHO kydex sheaths are vastly superior, and as I am buying this knife for me, my opinion carries more weight than it otherwise would. :D

my vote is for spyderco hands down in the folder world. they are awesome knives in their class and their only compitition is well out of their price catagory. i also second the vote for BK&T. i have a BK-7 that is in my camping gear. it replaces alot of other equipment.

as for the usefulness of the BK-7, last time i went camping i did some very heavy chopping. at least 40 minutes of heavy chopping and i had no problem with slipping or blisters. i don't exactly have girly soft hands but i found the smooth surface of the handle to reduce blister-causing friction. i'd say that knife is extremely well designed for extreme use. that said...the sheath is crap but it works for me. at the price you can get a bk-7 for you could buy an awesome custom sheath and still have a bargain for what you end up with.

How about the forthcoming Becker extreme series? S30V, Micarta scales.....

I would also recommend Fallkniven.
