In your opinion, what are some of the greatest mass-market knives made that for some reason are no longer produced? I think that several of the biggest knife companies around have done themselves a disservice by stopping what might be some of their best products ever. Here's my top 3:
3) Benchmade Aphid. A small, inexpensive, ergonomic, EDC knife, which was a true rival to the Mini Griptilian. The Mini Grip is well loved as one of the best knives in its price and size range, and I think this was every bit as good - but at a lesser price. Come back, Aphid!
2) Spyderco Native 3. This one's a little bit of a cheat, because I'm specifically referring to the $30 special that sold retail for a few years. Natives in many different varieties are still available - but you'd be hard pressed to find one at under $75. At $30, the Native was quite simply the best knife money could buy. Slim profile, great steel, great ergonomics, great build quality. At 2, 3, 4 times the price, it's still a good knife, but by no means a no-brainer.
1) Victorinox Voyageur. Everyone knows about Victorinox' iconic swiss army knives, and the metal handled alox versions are some of its best prized. Swiss army knives famously come in endless variety - but get this, since the mid 80s they've stopped making a metal handled one that contains scissors. The Voyageur is the discontinued model, a knife that based on its specs should sell for $25 or less - but is now worth $400 on the used market. Unless you're willing to pay the big bucks you're not getting a metal handle and scissors.
