Hi y'all,

I am going to get a neck knife soon and I want a really good one. I have been thinking about the Titanium Pat Crawford, but I wanted to hear about some others before I decide. I like the Crawford because it is custom made and fairly rare. It also has a chain instead of a cord. (much prefered)

If anyone out there knows of any other good ones please reply.

Thanks,
John

P.S, I would prefer it to be a custom.

You are a braver man than I if you are wanting to put a chain around your neck. I'd go for the cords myself, and add a quick-release type something in the loop somewhere. Not something that will break easily, but something that will stop the pain sometime before my spine seperates.

'Course, I also don't care for custom carry blades. I love custom knives, and have seen some beauties, but I have no wish to wander around with something of that value as a tool. I've lost/broken a blade or two in my time, and am glad they were in the low-dollar range... (Actually, for common use blades, I carry Spyderco returns. They get rid of knives people broke the plastic clips on, and will put a new metal clip on it for you. For 15 bucks a blade you can get Delicas and Enduras with a better clip than originally! Catch is, you gotta show up at their outlet...

Actually I am not planning on using it very much.

I am basically getting it because I wanted a neck knife to show off to my friends and so I could have something new to open my mail with!

John,

Try a search. There has been a bunch of "neck knife" threads in the past several months. Lots of good suggestions and ideas expressed in them.

You can get the same Crawford made of ATS 34 for 1/3 of the titanium one. I would also try Neil Blackwood and his tanto neck knife. He recently sent me picture of slightly smaller knife - that would make almost perfect neck knife. I got Boker Specialist but it is too heavy for neck carry, otherwise it is excellent production knife with even better MCS system.

Automantic,
I see no reason for you to not get a Crawford. I however would get one in ATS-34 instead of the Titanium. It will cost less than the titanium, and out perform it.
As for the the cord versus chain, I would not base you purchase on that. Ball chain can be bought at Home Depot, and cord can be bought almost anywhere. What might make a difference to me is if the sheath was built to be adaptable to a belt loop. Neck knives are great, but sometimes you might prefer to where the knife on your belt. Would be nice to atleast have the option.

Enjoy your purchase,

Check out Neil Blackwood's knives.( http://www.geocities.com/Eureka/Meeting/5520/index.html) He can make em any way you want to and I bet you'll love the knife. The only time I'm w/o mine is when I have to wear my rigger belt, which is 4" wide and the beltloop on the sheath only goes to 3.5". I could hang it around my neck, but I have never liked that idea. Take a look at his site, send an e-mail, whatever. He's a great person to work with.

Well, I endorse Lynn Griffith's Sniper as the best neck knife. I really love this tool and how useful it is.

I can not stand chains though since they pinch my skin so I use the cord. I also like the multiple carry system since I like my options.

Well, I see a Crawford is mentioned above. I dont own one, but based on his reputation and comment of many forumite, I dont think you could go wrong with one. Ray Kirk makes a slick little neck knife called the 'lil blue', its way too cool

Lynn Griffith makes an outstanding neck knife called the Patrolman. I had one I traded off, missed it so much I went and bought another just like it

Automantic,
I did the same search a while ago, and came to the conclusion that the best knife to dollar ratio is to be found is these little devils:

Mdl. 142 CORD-WRAP w/KYDEX sheath - $27.00
TITANIUM TIGER w/KYDEX sheath -$22.00

You can reach Newt at: Newt@Livesay.com

I have yet to receive them as they are on their way to sunny Israel - so If you can hold your breath for a few weeks (Holland probably can – he is an expert diver ;-) then I’ll tell you how they are.

Boy, tough choice! The Griffith Sniper is a great "mail knife" I also have a Crawford that is sweet! Tom Mayo makes some great neck Knives, ditto for Allen Blade, as does Mike Murphy of Running Dog Knives, Dr. Lathe's stuff looks nice too. Newt Livesay does some great value priced work too. REKAT made a great utility neck knife, rumor has it as discomtinued, but they are still available. So join this addictive sport! I will have to add the links later! Ryan Malpiede (Silence77@aol.com) made me a comfortable and stylish break away cord for my neck knife of the day. I am sure if enough guys asked he would do another run.

I realy appreciate the mentions!
Arizona,
You made a good point in that a neck knife CAN be worn as a small, handy belt knife. As you know, you can actually forget you are carrying one IWB. I could make you a 4" belt loop for that sheath!
I tend to think of of neck knives as a size catagory rather than just a method of carry. There are so many choices of quality knives.
What about a Talonite neck knife?

Just MHO, but stay away from titanium unless you need to get past a magnatometer for some reason I don't want to know about. I have the pleasure of owning and carrying neck knives from the following four makers and recommend them all without reservation. Prices depend on whether you want a worker or a looker that works.

Neil Blackwood (follow Neil's link above)
Steve Corkum www.hawkknives.com Great traditional tantos
RJ Martin www.martinsite.com More tantos.
Gary Bradburn www.toptexknives.com look for Gary on this site

There are many other great makers out there, do a search here for the other neck knife threads to get a good base of knowledge.

I'll cast another vote for the Griffith Sniper. A much more versatile tool than your average letter opener.

I got barry dawson neck knives last week and being a neck knife person ,I love these. They are both 8 inches with wrapped handles. The handles are wraped with a heavy duty string instead of paracord to keep the knife thinner but they have a real good grip.I know 8 inches seems long for a neck knife but these are only about 1/2 inch wide. Some people call them neck spikes. Even though they are triangular shaped and would not be good for ever day cutting they are very sharp and cut string and open letters very well. Very wicked knives. Made mostly for stabbing. Check him out. Came with well made kydex sheathes and Barry is very good to work with.

John,
You've had some great suggestions so far but there is one name that hasn't yet been mentioned - Fred Perrin. I'm a big neck knife fan myself & regularly rotate among several as part of my daily carry.

All of my pieces make great little utility knives. However, if I were to choose one based on its defensive potential, it would be a La Griffe. You can't really appreciate just how comfortable & ergonomic those funny looking little handles are until you've actually held one. As to retention, the finger hole makes it practically impossible for it to come out of your grip unless you want it to.

You can follow the link in my signature to see a couple of Fred's designs as well as some of my other neck knives. KnifeCenter also has a Perrin Knives page where several of his knives are displayed.
