What was your favorite pack of all time and why?

Mine was the Dutch Military Rucksack. I put that thing through hell on a lot of backpacking trips. All of the webbing attachments were in the perfect spots for attaching my gear. It had a built in weather proof lining and the padding for my back folded over with some clothes in the middle made for a great pillow at night.

P.S. If anyone has one they'd like to get rid of drop me note.

Jansport Big Bear 5000

It's not the most expensive pack in the world, but I'd swear the waist belt was custom fit to me. Plus the majority of packs cut the straps too narrow and rub the sides of my neck, not so on the Big Bear.

Lowe Alpine Crossbow 90 +15. It's HUGE (and heavy, but I can deal with it).

I'm a big guy and do some of my backpacking during hunting season here in upstate NY, so I have to carry a lot of large-sized warm clothes and hunting gear.

The big Crossbow can really haul some stuff! http://www.lowealpine.com/Technology/Crossbow.asp
It has a super-comfy waist belt and lots of load-stabilizing compression straps that make the Crossbow system work well. It also came with a hydration system.

Stay sharp,

My Gregory. It's the only pack I've ever worn that didn't give me any pain.

A light one! Since I've gone ultralight, it's much easier to live with a pack. A GoLite Dawn or Jam, depending on the trip. My Summer base weight (minus water, fuel, and food) is 10 pounds. Add 3-4 pounds for Winter.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, it is by far the Eagle A-III. My absolute perfect pack and faithful companion for over 6 years.

Have had one since '91. Been through a ton of crap and and several years in the Marine Corps...still own it and still use it a lot. I would however say that a pack i bought last year is rapidly replacing it often for trips....a Kifaru Marauder.

Mountainsmith Tundra

1995 still my everyday carry.

I am sure they have upgraded the design. I will buy another pretty soon.

It's three packs really:

Large - Berghaus Vulcan. Best big rucksack I've ever had. Have had it for 15 years now in all parts of the world and all kinds of weather and terrain. Will probably outlast me.

Medium - Karrimor Sabre 45. Sometimes with sidepockets, and sometimes not. Best medium sized rucksack I've ever had my hands on. Fantastic piece of kit.

Small - MacPac Tuatara 30. This sack isn't made anymore, and it'll be a sad day indeed when I have to retire it. Luckily, that day seems to be far away still, as it's standing up extremely well to all the abuse I'm giving it.

McHale SuperInex (XL) Bayonet. Can easily carry 100+ pounds and can be broken down into a smaller pack. Bulletproof, brilliant design.
