The best quality EDC (folder) for under 40$

If you want a Spydie, hard to go wrong with the Tenacious. Everyone I've gifted one to has LOVED it. There are other good knives out there, and honestly, as clich says, the Phat Bob will give Spydies a run for their money in terms of sheer slicing ability, and they come with a nice micarta handle. Won't find much at that price point that's a better deal than the Phat Bob. I'm also fond of the HK Monochrome, at that price point.

heh, im carrying a phat bob today
iirc they run about $50+- and op is asking about knives that are under $40.

how do you guys feel about the boker first responder... i know it has cheap blade steel but im lookin for a beater knife

In my opinion, almost any knives from Sanrenmu and the like. I know not everyone likes them but I don't really have a lot of cash.
In fact, you can buy several if you buy from the right places! I just received an Enlan El-04 and am planning to get an Enlan M020FH.

The HK (Benchmade) Monochrome will give you an N690 blade. (For my money, one of the best non-PM steels available). A well made frame lock with good ergonomics and a great blade shape. I've seen it for under $40.

If you like Spyderco, I have to recommend the newer FFG members of the Spyderco Byrd series. I have a FRN Byrd Cara Cara 2 which I just can't stop fiddling with. It's an amazing knife, especially for $19.

are there any downsides to the byrd series? thinking of getting the cara cara in g-10

+1 for outstanding value on the FRN Cara Cara.

Downside to Byrds:
Made in China bothers some.
Materials not high end but still quality
Less than attractive hole opener

For a really useful/high value US-made folder, albeit a pocket filler, you just cannot beat a Buck 110. They are <$30 at WallyWorlds - a bit more at the big chain sports/outdoors stores - but still <$40. A classic!

Another vote for the Boker Trance. I love the ergos, lock type (framelock), and love the shape. 2.75" blade length is perfect for us MI residents (3 inch blade or under!).
If you want a bigger, heavier knife, the Kabar Mule is another underrated knife imo.

Another vote for the Ontario RAT-1.

It's a broad question, a lot depends on your environment and value system, and knives are as personal as it gets, but I personally wouldn't hesitate for a second. I have folders that cost hundreds, but I bought one of these early on for about $70, EDC'd it for two years and never felt a lack. It's a solid, sturdy and remarkably versatile and well-thought-out WORKING knife design that performs remarkably well for a lot of varied tasks from the mundane to the extreme, it's been improved since I got mine, and I personally think it's a ridiculous bargain at the current going price of less than $30. Only real negatives are that the black finish (paint) on the blade (if you buy a black blade) and the clip (in either case) wear quickly, and it's a zero-status knife with knife snobs. It ain't sexy. No exotic steels, titanium or currently-fashionable handle materials, but great blade and handle shapes, decent steel, full-length open stainless frame and a solid lockup. At $30 you won't be reluctant to really use it for anything and everything, from opening packages to spreading peanut butter, and after a few years of really using it you will KNOW that you can rely on it. I'd rather have the humble RAT-1 in my pocket when things get really interesting than a lot of $150-$200 folders that I could name and some that I've bought. At $30 a shot you can likely afford to have one not only in your pocket, but in each glove compartment, briefcase and pack- something most folks are not likely to do with expensive folders.

I have both the Boker Trance and the Kershaw Skyline, but the Skyline gets most of the EDC duty. It holds an edge very well and sits get in the pocket.
