The Best S30V Skinner Available on the Market Today!!

Back about 15 years ago when I thought I knew how to use a skinning knife,I got to watch a guy who skins out a lot of whitetails,either foir mounts or butchering,after watching him with a model 103 skinner in action,I fully understand the shape of the blade and its functions.That guy flipped that knife over and peeled skin from the legs like nothing,took him less than 10 minutes to skin a whitetail without mistakes,unreal.

Since then I bought a 103 real cheapo and love it too.Not as good as good at skinning as that other guy,but i love the 103! S-30-V please!

I'd have to agree that the 103 would be the best.

I suspect that the reason nobody has put out an S30V version is that the big bucks go for the purtier and pointier knives......and that about 90% of the people who buy knives have never skinned a deer anyway.

So, an S30V blade on a 103 wouldn't make a profit for the company. I'd also guess that the 103 has been about the slowest selling knife that Buck makes.

But a limited run for those in the know would sell out pretty quick, I bet.

:thumbup:

I couldn't even imagine trying that with a 103 :eek::D

Don't remember who did it but remember maybe my brother slicing open the pounch and that will cause a fella to yak!:barf::barf:

But Razorblade is right about how you split the skin with the 103. You roll it over and run that blunted tip right down the inside of the hindqtrs, take out the genitals, then straight down the belly, and down just past the brisket. It really works well. We always used a hangin bar and skinned the deer head down. I've never done it head up. And damn sure never saw one hanging on the side of a Pine tree. :)

Here's a crazy idea...how about a limited run S30V Combo Set with the 103 and 121.
Now that would be very sweet! Not sure how attractive that combo sheath would be but maybe a stacked sheath would work.

Just image it for a moment!

Sounds like a great idea for a BCCI club fund raiser knife set:thumbup:

In reality, I probably wouldn't run right out and grab a 103 in S30V. If one came along, I would give it a try. Or any 103 for that matter.

I actually do very little hand skinnin on a deer. Just enough to gut it, slit the legs, and peel the neck skin down far enough to get a baseball size rock under it and tie it on to the skinnin cable and hook it on the hitch ball. Let the truck do the rest.

I would go for that combo!!!! :thumbup:

Or even just a 121 in S30V, as I have said on here on and off for quite a while now..

Now we are getting off into our "perfect" deer doins knife...
which I haven't found as yet:rolleyes::D

Here are the first two fixed blades Daddy gave me back in the 70's. The 121 first around 74 I think and the 103 a few years later. Both have seen a lot of use although that picture doesn't show it. The Old Timer Woodsman dates back to the 60's and is Daddy's personal knife. I've seen him using it back as far as I can remember. Those three are with me for life.

Dad used Schrades and Winchester or Remington pumps guns but he always bought me Browning Autoloaders and Buck knives. I think there is a statement about what he thought was the finest knife you could buy.

Nice trio there. Are the sheaths original? They look in good condition.

BTW I grew up with an Ithaca 37 upland pump, made in Ithaca. Still have it.

Somewhere in my knife collecting I swapped out the 121 sheath for that one. It's used but in better shape. That was a mistake. But I did it. I tend to like things with a neat, tidy, new, appearance. The 103 sheath is original. I never belt carried it much...it just went to camp in my camp bag for the most part. I even lost it once by leaving it laying around but got it back the next year. One of the other club members found it and new it was mine. That was a nice surprise.

I've done the cut you mention with a 103 numerous times and really enjoy the way it works . I've stopped using a 110,119 or 120 for that as those more often puncture the stomach . I think I wouldn't have much trouble using the Vanguard either as I can see the shape would work with no problems . But saddle your mule the way you like as your the one riding him . DM

Some of you have knew immediately what knife I was talking about! I just aquired this knife and I'm very pleased to add it to my collection. Even at Cabelas retail price it's the best deal going!! A classic drop point skinner in S30V and Rosewood handle. Can any body show me a better skinner value?

I've never handled one of them before, but the handles look like they would be really uncomfortable. Although I have a feeling I'm wrong :D
I have never grown fond of guards on my fixed blade knives either. A little is o.k, but I like to be able to move my hand where I want it, because I tend to choke up on a knife when workin an animal. YMMV

That said, Its still a lot of knife for the money. :thumbup:
