The best SAK

I picked this Alox Cadet up yesterday as an impulse buy at the outlet mall. (If I spend the day cloths shopping with my wife I buy a knife😉).

This is my first Alox SAK. I really like the scales - very light pocket footprint. This one will probably replace my Spartan.

The one SAK's usefulness that has really surprised me is the Midnite Manager. The ink pen....I can't count how many times I've utilized the pen in a pinch. The light is very functional as well.

Well, there was this red-headed waitress that could . . .Oops, you said best SAKs! Sorry about that. I think it's already been mentioned once, but the 108mm Victorinox Safari Trooper (sadly, no longer made) is the best SAK in my view - four minimum tools: a spear blade, a saw that doubles as a screwdriver and an opener, a sharp awl and a corkscrew, each one longer and thicker/more stout than their other models, textured red nylon scales, and a lanyard hole that goes through the handle, not some dinky split ring that gets in the way. The saw blade is the best of its kind as is the larger awl (but it's not positioned on the end, my only gripe). The longer corkscrew is handy for undoing knots as well as opening wine. No scissors? That's why I carry a Vic black Executive on my key ring. (Can't find a photo of my favorite red Safari Trooper, but here's the green NATO version I carried on active duty [not issued] in Italy, Belgium, and Greece.)

All that being said, the Victorinox Alox Farmer is an excellent choice as well.

I agree with Leghog. The Alox and Safaris are also my favorites. I carry a Farmer all day, every day, and it has never failed any task. Besides..., if you really NEED a toothpick, you can always whittle one.

While it didn't get my vote as "best" SAK, the Cadet is definitely in my top 3.

It is my go-to knife when I'm wearing a suit or formal wear. It disappears in the pocket and has has the highest utility/size ratio of any knife or multitool.

It's a solid model, no doubt.

The one SAK I carry every day regardless is my black Executive. It's small enough, yet not so small as the Classic-sized SAKs. It's also thin, and IMO its nail file, while not as aggressive as the one on the Cadet, is superior (IMO) because it files the nails more cleanly. Also, the nail cleaner tip is the best on any folding knife. I use every tool on it, including the orange peeler/screwdriver, though not always for peeling oranges. It also makes a nice scraper, and sometimes for lightly hooking/snagging things with.

I also usually carry my basic red Spartan, with an eyeglass screwdriver in the corkscrew. I've also found the corkscrew useful in loosening small, difficult knots. I've also used every tool on it, but have found the back-opening awl to be less than stellar, and it's by far the least-used of the tools on it.

If there were a way to carry the eyeglass screwdriver in the Pioneer, I would opt for that over the Spartan. As it is, my Pioneer(s) sees more use around the house than in my pocket. Simple, compact and bomb-proof. And its awl is awesomely useful. Of course, I could carry an eyeglass screwdriver/spare screw set that I got at the drug store if I want my Pioneer to see more pocket time, but having the Spartan's little driver is nicely convenient.

Ohhh. That's sweet, especially that combo tool saw. Why must be you make it known when it isn't even in reach. That's like dangling cheese for mice. Or like doing the pull the dollar trick from the poor guy.

I jest. Kind of.

My favorite plastic one is the recruit. And for alox I would go with the cadet

Knife carry is such a personal choice - kind of like which breed of dog one favors. I confess that I have a weakness for Vic Alox pieces and lean hard toward the Pioneer, Soldier, Electrician, Electrician Plus and Farmer models - it's a sickness. Once you step out and buy, I think fever is going to get you. Good luck!

Don't know what's "best" but here's some representative Vics I've carried lately:

Scissors are cute, but I've never run into anything that couldn't be just as easily cut with a sharp blade.....I'm not a seamstress, LOL....and the scissors take a spot which could be filled by a more useful tool. IMHO. YMMV.

^ Which Yeoman is that? Great tool load. And where do you get that little clip?

I got it at Swissbianco a while back, and I replaced the scales with those from a green Compact model. The clip is a Tec P7 suspension clip.

Scissors and The Wood Saw are a must for me.

It all comes down to lifestyle and personal choices.

Life style for sure but...More personal needs, rather than choices, I think. As I said, I've yet to run into something I could cut with scissors, which couldn't be easily cut with a blade.
I can think of no situation in which I,personally, would have need of a saw blade. Again YMMV,

I don't need a saw blade in my day-to-life, either.

But trimming a hangnail with a blade (as opposed to scissors), while possible, isn't something I choose to do.

Much less the spur of the moment nose hair....
