The Black Widow - By Rodrigo Sfreddo

I don't necessarily find the weld seam a flaw, but it is an unwelcome and unattractive addition to the pattern.
STeven Garsson

Weld seams are certainly not rare in mosaic pieces. Almost expected in some patterns. And I agree not necessarily a flaw.

Roger, that integral is superb.

I have one piece by Rodrigo, a Moran-style ST24, and it is just magnificient.

That said, I think the knife has EXCELLENT QPR, and a buyer would not lose any money on it, and could expect to make a few hundred dollars to an interested buyer

The knife is an absolute steal at $700. That doesn't mean I have to like it :)

Joss,

Do you have any idea how many people have harassed Rodrigo to make another one of those? That was a heck of a grab. Please post up a pic if you have one.

Doug - that is a slick bowie and another raging bargain if I recall correctly.

Now, how about some more eye-popping damascus (pic swiped from Jeff's site, hope he has one of the whole blade):

Just so we're clear... I wanted to say again that I think this piece is gorgeous and I'd love to have one of his knives, but my preference would be w/out the weld mark on the blade.

Since we are now oohing and ahhing other images, I enter my own acquisition. It's a semi-integral.

(I paid a LOT more than $700 for this, so the value on the initial one, if that price is correct, is off the charts.)

Here is a pic of the whole sword:

and here is a pic of my Sfreddo. Wolftooth damascus, all fittings damascus with a shell guard and fileworked pommel with a walrus ivory handle.

I think the fact that this knife is no longer available speaks for itself. Its a fantastic piece weld seam or no. Top and bottom is that there are 6 or 7 makers who I place in a small but distinguished group in my current and future collection, Rodrigo is in that group.

Jeff, please clarify:
Is it Rodrigo S. Freddo, and it's shortened to Sfreddo? (Like D. Alton Holder is called 'D'holder')

Or is it Rodrigo Sfreddo?

Forgive me for not knowing exactly. There are two versions in this thread.

I'm pretty sure it's Sfreddo and that the Masters of Fire poster is wrong. But that sword is freaking awesome, as are the knives posted by yourself and Marcel 54.

Hey Stephen, how about a pic of the knife Rodrigo made for you and the drawing that inspired it?

Roger

According to the Certificate of Authenticity that came with my Sfreddo,Gambler Bowie,it's Rodrigo Sfreddo.

I'm gonna' go on a bit here,I think Rodrigo drew inspiration for the Gambler Bowie from Moran's Man in the Moon,Curly Maple Coffin Damascus Bowie.
A while back,I went back and forth looking at both of them and it's uncanny how much alike they are.

Doug

Thanks bro! What the heck kind of wood is that for the handle? It's gorgeous, as is the whole knife.

Roger

Looks like Ironwood. I ordered a clone of the knife from Blade that you posted Roger (which incidently won the Peck award). The ironwood on mine is gorgeous too. Wherever he's getting his ironwood, he's getting the cream of the crop.

I need to take pics of the two knives I have from him and post them in here.

This was a spelling mistake that was made. His full name is Rodrigo Menezes Sfreddo.

At the Piney Woods Hammer-In lat fall, i heard B. R. Hughes say that many of the guys coming up for their JS stamps of late were already doing MS quality work both in it's precision and complexity. When I saw the picture of the intregral that Mr. Sfreddo had as one of his JS test knives, i thought that he is DEFINATELY one of those guys trhat Mr. Hughes was talking about. Amazing stuff.
