The Bowies of the Blade Show 2005 (Show Report)

I've never, ever, read or saw a better show report. Wow! Superb writing.

I had a most exciting weekend myself, but it couldn't involve knives. I was looking forward to the reports, and this one makes me smile nicely. Always good to see knives, and ALWAYS good to see faces! :D

Thank you.

Great report Roger as usual. Glad to see the makers and the knives. Now I'll be looking forward to you arrival at my house with those new acquisitions so I can get a real good look.

Thank you, that was a great report.
Someday I'll get to the big show, reporting like yours makes me feel like I'm almost there :D

Thanks Roger! Man, how did I miss you? Would've been nice to finally say hello... oh well, next year perhaps.

Interestingly enough, I see at least 4 knives in here that are now mine.

Once again, there were some really great knives and great folks at the show. Some exceptionally talented makers... it was pretty overwhelming.

Keith - I did get a chance to see Chris Deringer and his work. He had some very impressive forged integrals (including one fighter with integral double guard and wire wrap), but his most intriguing piece, in my opinion, was a Mongolian eating kit, complete with knife, chopsticks, toothpick, and ear spoon. Ear spoon? Yeah, ear spoon. I guess once you're done eating your Mongolian pickles (they eat lots of pickles, I'm told) you can clean your teeth and then your ears.

Well I could go on and on but I need to get back to work here. Thanks again Roger for the pictures and commentary.

By the way, one slight correction - the winner of the Peck award was Tom Gann - Pete Gill acquuired one of his knives, a little bowie, that was just exquisite. I can see why he won.

Thanks Wulf - correction made.

Sorry I missed you at the show - it would have been great to meet and greet.

Enjoy that Blade loot!

As usual, a great report, from our man on the scene. :)

Roger, or anybody that knows, I was curious who the judges were this year?

I know that one of the judges this year was Neil Ostroff from True North Knives. Excellent choice as Neil is very, very knowledgeable about ALL kinds of high-end custom knives - from miniatures to swords.

It was a great show! The room had been expanded this year with an extra 100 or so tables added. Saw lots of 'first timers' with some very impressive knives.

Howdy Roger!
I met you and your Dad last year at the Spirit of Steel Show. I really enjoy your posts and pictures. I wish you had some pictures of the cuttin' competition. I so wanted to see that especially since my buddy, Reggie won for the 2nd time. I'm looking forward to seeing in July at the Central Texas Knife Show.
Take Care,
Nichelle Carlson (Chris' knifewife)

Hi Nichelle,

I sure wish I had been able to attend the cutting competition, but had to leave before it began. I sure do hope I can make it down to CTKS - it's be great to see you and Chris - and of course, all those great makers and knives.

Roger

Hello Roger

That's an outstanding array of photographs. It obviously took a lot af time and effort to get it all prepared.

You should be applauded for this contribution, it goes to show the great people in this community - willing to sacrifice a load to time to help inform others. I appreciate it, too.

Superb camera workmanship and info, sir.

Mark

I Gotta say Brion Tomberlin's bowies are Damn Impressive Looking .MS Mike Williams is on my "got to get one in the Near future" List.Looks like BrionT. just got himself a spot on the same list

Geez, thanks for the pics and report, man!
You're really making me wish I could've been there.

I was also wondering, did you happen to get any pictures of the winning miniature knife you mentioned?

Sorry possum - I wanted to shoot the award winners but they were all in the hands of Point Seven at the time.

Roger, that's an A+ report on the show. .
Thank you for the terrific effort you put into it.

I wish I could have gone. Maybe next year.

Roger,

Great pics, excellent report. Thanks for sharing. I didn't get to talk to all the smiths you did but will have to print out your posting for next time I go back to Blade so I know what to look for.

Roger,

Thanks for making Blade available to us northwest coasters stuck up here in the rain... One day, Atlanta may become my Mecca, but for now, I'm lovin' it vicariously through your most generous contribution of time and effort to us denizens of BFC..

'course, it's just making me envious enough to maybe spur me on to a real road trip next year! :D

You really know what you like, and tell it like it happened.

I have got to borrow my wife's digital camera for the next knife show that I go to, which will be the AKI.

Great meeting you, and I wish that I had been able to spend more time hanging out with you and Stephen F. I wanted to see what you guys picked up.

Best Regards, and congratulations on your excellent purchases.

Wow - great post Roger, even in my semi comatose, jet lagged, state that makes great reading, and helps remind me of what went on. I say helps remind me, because after about 2pm on Thursday afternoon I just got caught up in the avalanche that was my first Blade, finally coming to a gentle stop on Sunday afternoon!

It was really great meeting you fellas, it helped make my trip. Special thanks go out to Ron Newton who helped turn the visit into something really special.

Not enough opportunities to meet all the forumites and makers I wanted to, so I will just have to start planning another trip over.

Stephen

Great reporting and photography, Roger. Thanks so much! Makes me feel I was there.

Best,
Will

I would have posted earlier, except that I'm still pissed off at Roger for leaving so quickly at Blade! ;) :p

Seriously; one great review, Roger!
