The Bowies of the Blade Show 2005 (Show Report)

Some of my forged blade highlights:

Kevin Cashen's damascus bowies...superb!
Bailey's swords. WOW.
Sean McIntyre's huge array of BIG honkin' blades
Burt Foster's neat temperlines
Brion Tomberlin's Southwest Bowie
Adam DeRosier's Choppers
Dan Farr's handles that you can shave in
Luciano Dorneles' damascus bowies for $800 (A STEAL)
Ricardo Vilar getting his JS-nicest guy on the planet
Trading a knife to Danbo for a new pistola
Seeing my next Crowell knife take shape-if you saw his chopper, you saw the 10", laminated blade with temperline.
Hanging with some of the best craftsmen in the world, for free (kinda).

Roger,
What a terrific report! Thanks for sneaking in a picture of yourself - next time I will recognize you and hopefully have the pleasure of meeting you in person! I can tell from your pictures that we were standing side by side at the ABS banquet shooting the JS and MS groups. Always enjoy your posts, Roger - and your taste in blades is beyond reproach!

Holy smokes, so close and yet so far! Too bad one of us wasn't wearing a name tag at the time - would have loved to have met you and had a chat. Next time 'round!

Roger

Roger,
Thanks for the great report. I had hoped to meet you and a few more people from these forums, maybe next year... Did you manage to see the large bowie from Ed Fowler? It was simply the nicest bowie knife I've ever seen and held, ...impeccable and purely elegant. There was a distinct area of wootz in the blade between the hardened portion and softer back. Just amazing work!

Awesome report!

If you were at the ABS Banquet, did you hear the mention I got from Joe Keeslar? He was supposedly talking about the MS touch marks for the ABS Museum and he mention "a couple young guys out in California that can duplicate touch marks from a magazine photo." Jim said he shouted out "Yea, R&J Cutlery!" Makes me damn proud! :D

2knife - yes, I saw Ed's bowie but didn't get to handle it. There were a fair number of people crwding around it at the time and Ed was explaining the whole wootz-band thing - I didn't catch the half of it. The knife looked way cool though. I like Ed's larger pieces but don't see where I'll be able to afford one anytime soon. ;)

Steven - I was toward the back of the room at the banquet (with Newton, Fuegen and J.W. Randall) - I heard them twisting arms to get the touch marks in, but didn't catch the shout out. Good for you all the same!

What are 'touch marks'? :D

The stamps used to mark the blades. I duplicated Al Barton's mark by request of Joe Keeslar because Al's original stamp cannot be found.

Roger,
Thanks for the reveiw. This was my first Blade Show and it took some will power to stay sitting behind the table when there was so much to look at. A normal show here in Australia is about 30 tables so I spent most of the weekend in a state of awe. It was great to meet you and some of the other guys from the forums and some of the best makers in the world. One of the highlights for me was getting to handle the bowie that Steve Dunn is holding in the photo you posted, a truely stunning peice of work. Thanks again for the pics, at least I got to see some of the show.

Hi Doug,

You're welcome! It was a pleasure meeting you - I wish that I had an opportunity to get a shot of your knives (and so many other great makers that I missed) but almost all of these pics were taken during a very frantic and time-limited Saturday morning. I remember that snakewood bowie you had - just beautiful!

Roger

Doug - Good to meet Sean and yourself, I echo Rogers sentiments on that Snakewood and damascus bowie - a fantastic piece, hopefully theres some pics somewhere.

Stephen

Thanks Stephen, its good to be able to put faces with the names. Thanks for the comments on my knife, I was happy with the way it turned out. I will try to take a photo and post it on here, not very good with cameras or computers I'm afraid.

Doug

fantastic review, everything and about everyone i would want to visit with... and i didnt even have to leave Biloxi

Here's a look at the Snakewood bowie. The picture does not really do the knife justice - the damascus pattern is quite stunning and the snakewood is off the charts!
