The Cantina and Diversity

I'm wrong too, because I seriously doubt crayfish are in Antarctica. They'll have relatives offshore yes, but not be onland.

Why do I care? As a child, I noticed crayfish behaving strangely. The weirdness stuck with me until I invited myself to help with a study to determine the migratory and group behaviours of lobsters. Along the way I learned a lot about the Northern Crayfish...

Long story short: crayfish are lobsters, and therefore a quality dining experience ; )

I think the lobster forumites, who don't post very much after all, prefer to be referred to as "Crayfish-Americans".

Many a cold-water lobsterman has lost a finger or worse to their curved cutting edges...

Seriously, check out this "gift" we recieved this xmas- words don't describe it.

A brass-n'-glass lobster lamp.

HC-WTFIT!?!   :( :foot:

Those with exoskeletons need to ride at the back of the bus.

Aint that the truth though? Crawdads were some of the best eatin' I ever had when I lived down in Georgia. My buddy an' I would go out deer huntin' for the weekend. He'd bring along a big ole bag of Crawdads and and I'd bring along a big ole container of Brunswick stew, and we'd sit around our camp fire chowin' down, chasin' it with our illegally acquired beer and ponder the mysteries of the world and how to solve 'em. (we were only about sixteen or so) Heh...kinda funny...brings back all sortsa good memories thinkin' back on all that...

I've only had crawdads once since I've moved to Alaska. My wife was so grossed out she had to leave the room.:D Haven't had Brunswick stew or boiled peanuts though. Funny the things you come to miss.

Oh...yeah...the topic...racism an' all....I almost forgot....:D That's one of the first things I learned to love about Alaska, is the fact that there's so much more tolerance here than there was down South. I guess one of the locals down in Glennallen chalked it up pretty well for me when I first moved here. "Yup...there's still room enough up here for everyone"

Not that I haven't been referred to as a "White Devil" a few thousand times by some of the Natives I've dealt with, but...that was in the line of work, which I never took personally. Perhaps a subtle reminder that prejudice and intolerance runs in all directions?

Prejudice and bigotry are learned, not genetically inherited, so it stands to reason they can be "un-learned". The ones that twist me in knots are those that buy into and perpetuate the negative stereotypes so easily latched onto by unmentored young people.

I like knives. If you like knives, I don't care what color you are, or whether you pee standing up or sitting down. We may differ on food, religion, music, et cetera, but we can agree we both like knives. In a way that makes us kin.

Far as mudbugs (crawdads) go, we got 'em in the creeks around here big as baby lobsters. You ain't a true mudbug eater if you don't suck the head after you tear it off. :D

"Rock Lobster" was a RocknRoll undernoticed classic.

I'm not sure how much of racism is learned, besides 'a lot', that is. I think men are afraid of differences. Physical deformities, for instance, often repulse people not particularly 'trained' to mistrust them.

Yup, pinch the tail and suck the head until the eyeballs collapse! :D

I don't know exactly what to say to this post, Sgt Jim. If we were all the same I wouldn't want to be here, and there are many SF novels written around just such a theme.

Succesful societies have shared belief systems amongst the population, but those beliefs are always under change.

I can't know what you mean by 'diverse' from your short statement. The US has always been a 'melting pot' and learned to be proud of this. When people forget their common bound of humanity, we have a problem, but the story of Man is the story of culture clash.

common intrests may have brought us here, but diversity in our other persuits is what keeps us here. wouldn't be no fun at all if we all thought & acted the same, too predictable & boring.

Strength in diversity. United by purpose, and strengthened by our disparate roots, we press on towards the...I'm sorry, what were we talking about? :D

Really, I don't care what color or accent my friends have, nor my rare enemies, either. I knew I was finally getting over some ingrained deep southern racism when I went to a few parties some years ago, and realized (after a couple of hours) that I was the only "white" person there...and it didn't matter.

Anyway, Happy New Year, everybody.

I was 25 years old or so, a real protected baby, and found out to my utter astonishment Blacks were prejudiced against Whites and others. Prejudice is shared.

Nothing's ever changed my mind about simply looking for human beings.

Good thread, my friend. I think that it demonstrates (as if it needed demonstrating) why this is such a comfortable place to hang out. In a respectful community, no topic should be off-limits.
Yes, I get PO'd at some cantinistas. I have put people on my 'ignore' list. But It seems that the good will overcomes the bad, and I come back and do what I do around here. We do what we can, huh?

Look at the word.

Pre judge right?

I don't think there is a one of us here now that isn't guilty of it. Perhaps not recently, perhaps not consciously, perhaps not maliciously.

We all do it, it's part of the human condition.

(Part of one of my work speeches. "Of course they weren't right, but they are the customer"...)
