The Combat Smatchet?

Hi Jeff,so,shooting the messenger can get results. After all,you were the only target in the sights.

Jeff: Just on more question. If the real reason for the discontinue of the smatchet was because it was dangerous to make then why did the Gun Digest book of knives say it was because of corporate image?

Sincerely,
Adam

Ive carried and used Buck knives since 1971 and find them very useful in multiple roles. The 120 General was my go-to carry for about 40 years, until mine went missing. It was more than a "tool", Chuck Buck's beliefs and opinions notwithstanding, and some went to RVN in replace of the USMC Kabar, and were prized for their edges and stainless steel construction in the wet climate. No longer my favorite go-to, it still serves a purpose in my inventory as part of my trunk kit...

I didn't know Buck made a smatchet. Does anyone have one so they could post a pic?

I have an OSS smatchet from WWII but it's made by Ca*e...

This bit from JH:
Rex Applegate Fairbairn Wells Creek SMATCHET
16" combat smatchet machette by Wells Creek Knife and Gun Works, Scottsburg, Oregon USA.

As stated in the Devine auction catalogue for the Applegate estate these wellse creek smatchets were made by Buck Knives for Rex Applegates Wells Creek Knife and Gun Works and only 750 were made.

This has the typical nylon sheath.

According to my records, we made the model 912 Smatchet in 1989 and 1990. We shipped the bulk of 500 the first year and the balance the following year. They do not have Buck stamped on them. They are stamped:
Combat Smatchet, Wells Creek, Knife and gun works, Scottsburg, Oregon on one side and area stamped with the signatures of Rex Applegatae and W.E. Fairbairn on the other. Its a big'n! I found an ad showing the price at $169 and i have seen them sell for $400.
Hope this helps,

Edited to add: No, this does not belong to me.

Still, that smatchet is kinda awesome. On the subject: what is a smatchet actually useful for? And am I right for assuming it is a conjoining of 'small' and 'hatchet'? Or maybe 'smashing' and 'hatchet'?

Look at the blade on that thing. I'm pretty sure that you could kayak with it if the situation called for it.
