The Comtech Stinger

KELT,

My training is going OK. I go to the school once a week now(I used to attend classes 4 times a week) because of my new job, but I still do some solo training. We'll probably be at Guro Bolden's Summer camp this year...I'll send you the seminar schedule by e-mail. Have you found a FMA school yet? Or are you still training solo?

I'm never selling the stuff that I got from Chas.

Kelvin,

Hey Dude, you have had some time to go 4 times a week...not only once a week. I think you are at the point where Solo Training is what you have left.

Now is the time for Self-discovery, you know? At one point, you have to break a little, a lot or altogether and find your own way.

You're probably going to find all sorts of new and interesting things on your own too, don't just practice what you have been practicing...as advised... But leap on out there and do some wacky things too...you'll be amazed what happens.

Kelvin-
No, i haven't been able to get ANY Filipino styles around here (northeast PA.)...there was a decent guy teaching Kenpo and he worked with some Arnis (Looked a lot like what Guro Bolden was doing in Poughkeepsie)...he moved his school even further North of here and apparently due to size of the place can't do as many different classes and such...so i haven't had much luck...a shame cause I have a really cool basic Arnis tape that Bram Frank gave me and it's an excellent tape to learn with somebody (my wife has expressed a passing interest in it, but it's on again and off again...oh wait, that's the sex part)....
Also, i ended up with costochondritis, probably from too many left hooks on the heavy bag and boxing...nasty little condition, can imitate heart pain...really had me talking with God for a while...so i'm slowly recovering and getting back pretty well into my workouts....
Hey, thanks for the AMAA schedule, I appreciate it!!

All three of my kids have a Stinger on their keychains. My teenage son has a black one; he's starting high school next year, and the Stinger makes a perfect covert defensive tool. Add a bandana and you can conquer the world!

My two daughters own a green and blue one, respectively. The youngest actually painted hers so that the tip of the Stinger looks like a face, with eyes and a nose, etc.

That's the beauty of these things. They're there, but they're not. And they're so simple to use that even my 8 year old daughter can make my arm numb.

Don, don't you think it's time to buy a new kitchen table?

There's a couple of dents in there from JSP Koppo Sticks too...I could not resist. Hmm, I guess if the table was not just a generic table, it would not get wacked once in awhile...

Please, don't think I have a table with craters in it.

But...uhh...nevermind.

Timmy,

I do throw knives, hatchets, Tomahawks and almost anything. I just cannot do it where I live right now.

It has been on hold for a while...

I'll post a pic of some of my stuff later...

Well, I finally got one. It's bigger than I thought (for those who have seen it, it's 1/2" thick, 3" long, with 2" wide grip)and has a little pressure point chart included.

2Sharp, the accupressure context is from those who've decided to file down the point.

I haven't decided with grip I like better (index/middle or middle/ring fingers). It can put a wicked dent and personally, I like it more than a kubotan. Then again, I'd rather use a mini-mag light over a kubotan, and a closed Gunting if I wanted to punch.

Got some good Gunting, Boxing, Phoenix Eye possibilities. Maybe a fist dagger trainer as well. I'm not fond of the key hole location, I'd like mine at the bottom and in the middle as to allow more of the point to come out. I don't expect it to replace brass knuckles and I got this for those no knife events/locations.

I just received two Stingers yesterday from Szabo Inc. (good deal, BTW, $8 each, no shipping). I figured I would post here with my thoughts, as I feel almost like I must be missing something about this device.

I received them, and took the fine side of an emery board to the places where the flash made it uncomfortable. Then, I washed it clean, and attached it to my keys. My thoughts:

1. It's larger than I thought it would be. I was initially put off by this, as it's one more things to take up space in my pockets. However, it is relatively comfortable to hold.

2. I normally keep my keys in my pocket, but attached by a long, thin nylon lanyard to a belt loop. Carrying it this way, I can keep my keys constantly on me in any conditions, and never worry about losing my keys. I need to remove the keys from that to attach them to the Stinger, if I'm going to have the Stinger ready to use, making the keys less secure.

3. Even if it does allow you to use your hand some, it still does definitely reduce the efficiency of that hand for grabbing, drawing another weapon, etc.

4. Last bitch point: If you view this as a step on the force continuum, what are you gonna do when it goes from non-lethal to lethal, drop the Stinger (and keys) to draw blade? I'd rather have a pen, or kubaton for that.

I guess I can see the innocuousness and legality of it, and see it as a useful tool for airports, courthouses, and other metal detector situations that don't require my Livesay NRGs. Again, though, I'm not sure it's any better than a solid pen, or the plastic and wooden kubatons/koppo sticks I can make myself.

Not trying to knock the Stinger. I did carry it all last night, and got somewhat acclimated to it, and I normally find myself agreeing with the many thoughtful posters here. That's why I wonder if I'm missing something that everyone else sees in the Stinger.

Also, anyone know the material the Stinger is made of? If not, anyone know whether it's just a polymer, or if it's got glass in it?

It looks like Delrin to me, and the only reason I ask was because I was thinking a few holes drilled in strategic places would lighten the Stinger even more, and add some options for decoration. Which brings me to the last and final point on this far too long post: Has anyone done anything to decorate/modify their Stinger to make it more effective or more innocent looking?

Thanks.

Stay Sharp,
Joe S.

On JAK's late Forum in KnifeForums the Stinger was brought up a few times.

Jerry Van Cook posted a story on going through security with it, and successfully claiming it was a male fertility fetish.

Or maybe

I have used it as a massage/accupressure tool quite often.

My bride, with the help of the kids, decorated hers a bit. They hot glued some beads and stuff. They called it a cosmic southwestern theme, I passed on the bead work for mine.

Based on Mickey's idea, I wrote to Mike Sastre about what the cost of a Stinger neck sheath would be--he said he'd get back to me in roughly a week. Thanks for the idea, Mickey!

For a story about actual Stinger use, go here: http://www.knifeforums.com/ubb/Forum29/HTML/000061.html , about mid-way down the page.

One tweak to Don's idea re security people having one in each hand (also good for joggers): hook 'em to those keychains that have what looks like phone receiver cord that you wear around your wrists. Maximum retention!

I have several stingers and on the key ring they do not draw unnessary attention and on long walks across dark parking lots it keeps the key fumble factor low and the item/weapon is ready to go.

Glad for you, zxas, but MMHV--it's a low profile carry and a great tool but for ME, a lousy keychain, hence my begging Mike to follow in Mickey's footsteps.

TANSTAAFL, right?

Just a thought to tell Mike Sastre, if you already haven't, is that the sheaths would be oh-so-perfect if they could be made without metal rivets. I don't think that they would be necessary anyway, assuming a decent thickness of Kydex/Concealex, since the piece is small. Just a simple foldover design that just grasps the "head" of the Stinger, with two holes for cord attachment.

I like the idea a lot. Will order one, maybe two if/when they get made. This would make the Stinger so easy to carry, day in, day, out I think, with so many carrying options (wrist, static cord into IWB, stat. cord into pocket, etc.).

I'm sure it was already thought of, but I just wanted to mention it, being as I view the Stinger's non-metallic construction as one of it's useful features.

Joe:

Just e-mailed this thread to Mike. Thanks for the tip--I forgot about how nice a non-metal-bearing sheath would be!

I also made a small Kydex sheath for the Stinger as a keyring. It is 1 3/4" long by 1 1/16" wide .063 Black Kydex. It fits onto the front 1" of the Stinger's tip.It is held together by one black rivet with an 1/8" hole for a 1" split keyring. Now I can remove the Stinger from my car keys instead of punching with the keys dangling down from the bottom of my hand.

For anyone into a really low-cost means of carrying your Stinger, just pick a belt-loop on your jeans (preferrably the one on your strong hand side, closest to the zipper) and just slide it through "point" first, AND either the top or bottom half of the front vertical grip. Stays in place like a charm, and comes out in a flash.
