Yes. It happens. Sometimes.
For the record if it were me that recieved that knife I would have taken it apart and cleaned it too. And that would be the end of the story. Did your knife turn out ok? You never mentioned if it did. If it's still messed up then yeah, you're SOL. But that's the risk you run when you start working on knives. If you're still unhappy with the knife I'm sure there are plenty of people who would take it off your hands.
What exactly did you want from Jeff after you took apart the knife? A partial refund credit for selling you a 'used' knife?
CutleryShoppe is basically a one-man company. Everything goes through Jeff's hands. So if you're accusing his company of something you're accusing him. So when he says it's impossible for a dirty used knife to be resold as 'new', its because he personally looks at every return. It's waaaay more likely that it came that way from the factory.
