The Cutting Edge Catalog?

Wait a minute!!!!!
I was trying to read about the Cutting Edge!!
Lynne the knives look great.
(Since I began making knives in 1992 I have found the knifemaking world the kindest place with kind, wonderful people, who would help you out with anything, but after reading this post, I am not sure.) I suppose it is slightly disapointing to hear you all talk this way about anyone. sure hope you don't act like this often.
Hoping for peace in the New Year!
Audra, ABS journeyman-bladesmith.

Gene, enjoy your Gaston. I have one of his stag handled hunters I got from him at the NY show in 1988. His work is excellent.

BTW-Audra, do you have a website? Your work appears really excellent.

As a newbie I appreciate Lynn for his knives and his knowledge. I like reading his posts and looking at his knives. Heck, I'll even buy one someday. He strikes me as honest, eager, enthusiastic and the motivations of the people who find his "self promotion" annoying are suspect. Leave the guy alone. I want to hear what he has to say and see what he has to sell.

So what if Lynn's proud of his work? He should be. I'm proud of the knives I make. One of my knifemaking goals is to be featured in "The Cutting Edge". I consider that to be a major milestone in knifemaking. Kudos to Lynn for that. He now shares something with other makers of fine knives that some of us may not. I come to BladeForums by choice and I love to see pictures and read the technical information of knives whether it's a pic of someone's first kit knife or an unobtainable Loveless original. It's not like Lynn's calling anyone at home during dinnertime to sell knives. I can weed self promotion out of threads myself and still gain knife related information from the thread. A knifemaker needs to make enough money to at least keep the work flowing.
Maybe a "Brag Board" forum is in order. A place were people can display pic's of their work, whether the knives are for sale or not, without fear of criticism unless it were constructive from some of the guru's.

Ok Even though this thread stinks of something I should stay the hell out of Im going to add my two cents anyway.

Ok Though this thread sounds like something I should probably stay out of Im going to add my two cents anyway:

There have been a few (few) posts from lynn that seemed a little.... lets say transparent. I would look and say "well any angle to get your name out there" ....but the majority of the times he has contributed to at least my knowledge and understanding. Even when his threads or responses werent informative they were enjoyable to read and he seems, as much as someone can tell in cyberspace, like a decent and entertaining person. Many Many good things have been said about him by others and although he does push his knives he has MANY times commented favorably on the works of others. Alot of makers here and on rec.knives post "hey check out my new knife" type threads and I for one am happy as hell to look at any new pix of knives. As far as this biz with the cutting edge..... well I am an artist and craftsperson and if I got something I made printed in the cutting edge or anything else I would crow crow crow. I made leather cases for a time and a store on Madison ave in NY started carrying them. They gave me a window after some time and I took photos. I still have them and show them to EVERYONE !

So other people notice too? I don't mean to be harsh, but usually when I see a post by Lynn Griffith, the term "plug" comes to mind.

He does, however, seem to be quite a nice guy, and his "advertizing" is not harmful and can be educational. That's why I've refrained from comment on this matter in the past.

All in all, it doesn't bother me, but people do notice..

It takes millisececonds to read Lynn's name in a post and less than a second to scan past. I like what he presents and if you don't well, don't read it. Go Lynn!!

I never would have known what a Lynn Griffith knife was or any background on his work except for the forums. Personally, I don't see what all the hub bub is about bub.

But people do get worked up on these forums and I guess that rules are rules.

Daniel

Thank you all for your opinions on this subject.

Here is our final decision on it.
Our rules stay are they are:
Advertisements, Commercials, or Billboards.
These posts are not welcome anywhere other than the For Sale (or Trade) forums, and follow certain restrictions even then. Contact the Webmaster for more information on Advertising in the For Sale forums.

Commercials and Billboards refer to posts that are thinly disguised as an attempt to increase sales to a vendor, dealer, or retailer. Commercials tend to have detailed descriptions of a product, posted ostensibly to "inform" the potential customers, while Billboards tend to be pictures with a short description. Either way, they are not welcome.

Lynn has to follow the same rules that everyone else does. He agreed to follow these rules when he signed up for this site, and by his use of this site, he is bound by this agreement.

We don't have a problem with him posting about his products, or answering questions about his products, however the self promotion needs to be toned down, and we've warned him before about it.

Ignoring it is not the answer as it sets a bad example for others to follow, and rules are for everyone to follow. If we just ignore it, it opens the door for others to do the same thing.

We realize that the custom makers need a place to get feedback on their designs and a dedicated area to sell / promote their products. To that end, we have just opened the Knives for Sale: Makers forum in the exchange section.

There, they can promote their products, ask for feedback, and sell their wares without having to use the General Forum. Construction and materials questions still belong in the Shop Talk Forum, but this provides a sales and promotion outlet as well.

Thanks for your support. This should answer all of your questions.

Spark, that's a great idea! It'll solve so many problems plus give us a direct place that has custom makers to share their wares! Too cool!

You came up with a great solution, Spark. Thanks, as usual, for your fine efforts.

Spark, Solomon had nothing on you my friend.
Now let's see who uses it?

Don't know about all this other stuff BUT...

I kinda LIKE the bead-blasted blades with stag! Its the first time I've seen it, and just might have to pick one up!(I'm sticking with *knife* discussion
