The Deep End

I'm with you as far as the urban setting goes. I'm pretty proud of myself so far this summer as far as finding reasons to use my GSO's.

What plant has those big awesome leaves?

Justin, I received that old school GSO 5.0 today. I have to disagree with you brother. I LOVE THAT THING! Sharp as sh*t and feels more stout than the GSO 4.7 in my hands and the 2 x GSO 5.1's which passed through my hands. Plus the tumbled finish won't make me feel sorry for beating on it.

I tell you what, I really think that had Guy NOT expanded so quickly and had he not tweaked so many designs, those older models would have carried him through very well for a few more years till he'd get enough cash flow to make the leap. I don't wish to open a discussion about the means and the ways and perhaps I ought not to have made that observation, but heck I did because after all, this thread is themed, "The Deep End" ;)

To the first part of your quote that I paraphrased: YES! My 5 is BY FAR my favorite and highest quality knife that I've ever owned.

The second part of what I quoted (despite your caveat for not continuing a discussion): I'm sorry, but that sums up a thought I've had almost exactly, so I have to say something. Clearly Guy wants to continue innovating and improving and I respect that and am definitely not suggesting he should change, I've just noticed that all the old spec stuff was still flying off the shelf just the way it was!

Coiled, are using a Wicker Edge Pro?
Close. I have an Edge pro apex with shapton stones. Without going off the deep end with sharpening, let me just say that a lapping plate was well worth the money.

That would be corn. 1st year of planting corn; they grew like crazy.

Be careful of that deep end! Holy moly. Lol.

Obviously I'm fairly new around here, but I've had the fortune to have both a new and old 5.1. From a new guy's point of view, the "old" spec is still very much relevant and I would be 100% satisfied with it.

Ha, corn?!? Here I was thinking it was something exotic and tropical!

Also, get those screws aligned. GSO's just don't cut the same without proper alignment!

I totally concur with both you and Silver on that point. The new ones have the sharpened and 90 degrees spine angle which makes them fit for ferro rod striking if all else fails, but no one would or should kick the old
school GSOs outta bed, well not yet anyway ;)

Haha! After taking the photos, those dang screws jumped out and screamed bloody murder to me. Was ok with the pics just due to the shiny edges. I'm glad at least 1 person here is as OC as me. The screws will be addressed the next time you see this knife!

Oh, and corn is exotic (in my salsa garden)! Lol

I keep my screws straight also.

Based on my intro pics, I have 2 offending knives. What took so long to point it out? Lol

What if the screws are all perpendicular? Not the same? I have a carpenter square, so they'd be perfectly perpendicular.

Some people are OCD about their screws. I purposefully did them crooked on my 4.1 to bug my friend and never ended up fixing them.

Some of you seriously have some screws loose. Thank goodness that Guy put a stop to your OCD by using the newer pattern fasteners instead of the flat head screws, or the phillips! Unlessssss.... He's also a nutjob OCD like the rest of you ;)

Please put $20 on "nut job" for me. Thanks. :)

Holy cow! Great intro thread my friend. However I am a bit worried about you having all that sharp steel around, what with the earth quakes and mud slides. You may need to store it in an off-site location just to be safe. If so, I know a guy in Idaho.... ;)

Congratulations man, and good for you for showing us how to kick butt on the exchange. It can be done!

Does he happen to be in the proximity of SW Idaho and at times magically appears when you take a peek at reflective surfaces? :D

Best part about the new models is the Torx fastener. I sighed with relief. No more having to have sets of extras in case one gets marred while trying to get that last thousandth out of it.

Thanks to everyone for the warm welcome! OBX's collection is impressive!

I thought I'd go show some action photos of my freshly sharpened 4.1. Being in a urban setting, it's a bit harder to find useful work to do. I thought I could clean up the garden with the 4.1, but my better half beat me to it. Oh well, guess it's just another photo op. :)

TY!!! And welcome! Glad to see another fully addicted S!K fan!!
