The Deep End

Haha! After taking the photos, those dang screws jumped out and screamed bloody murder to me. Was ok with the pics just due to the shiny edges. I'm glad at least 1 person here is as OC as me. The screws will be addressed the next time you see this knife!

Oh, and corn is exotic (in my salsa garden)! Lol

Sorry for the third thread, I am a little slow after several bourbons last night and I couldn't resist....I change and wash my scales often and I've found, being right handed, that putting the screws on the other side causes the blade to face away from me when I remove or put the scales back on.

And there's your daily safety tip! Happy Father's Day!

2 questions in the quest of knowledge.

1) how do you get the colors of camo micarta show? OBX's photo shows some great color that I don't see in mine. Is there sanding or an certain oil treatment used?

2) Why did the batoning thread get locked? I didn't see anything that looked bad (and I don't want to get a future thread locked either).

Thanks!

I will be also interested to find out about bringing out the luster in the GSO handle scales in canvas. What type of oil would be safe on canvas?

I would imagine that might be more a function of camera and lighting than something done to the scales but I may be wrong. It's happened once or twice before :D

I agree with grog, there are also variations found in different batches of micarta. If you want to darken them, you could try mineral oil

Also curious about the locked thread!?

Different batches for sure. Here's an older GSO 5 verses a newer 5...

I'm pretty sure that the mineral oil will bring out the colors a lot more.

Ok,

1st, I was hoping to have that redish color stand out more. The green as well. To my eye, my camo color is only dark gray and tan. Check my pics of the 4.1 to see what I'm talking about.

2nd, you have both a 3.5 and 4.1 with a sterile (no markings) blade?! I love it! Was those an old run or a custom request?

Are you talking about the 4.1 in the planter photos? That almost looks like natural canvas or black canvas.
What do the look like when you get them wet?

The 3.5 is a factory 2nd that had really light etching and that 4.1 was a second that apparently had to be re-tumbled after it was etched. I really liked that one and I still regret having to sell it last year.
Here it is next to the 4.1 I have now.

Love my babies, and screw alignment is a must lmao.
The jimpless 4.1 is my favorite by far...carry one every day. I sold off my regular 4.1 and got a spare jimpless.
A gso5 should be added to the stable very soon.

They carry so much better with the 4.1 kydex and the kydex loops i had made for the 6 and 10. Have another waiting for the 5 sheath, thou I'll likely have a taco sheath made for it.

Yep, the one in the planter. I put some frog lube on a section and I saw some red, blue, black, and tan color tones.

That jimpless jade 4.1 is very nice, and that's a nice shiny edge on that black one. The more I see the jade, the more I seem to like it.

I did not add mineral oil or anything to enhance the colors of my scales. I believe there are at least 3 different camo colors: lighter with light blue, dark brown and a 3 color where there is little blue. I've been lucky to get mostly the lighter color where the blue pops.

I don't know why the baton thread was stopped. I emailed the forum and have not received a response or a rebuke. Can the author of the post close a post? My browser, chrome, has had some problems with this forum.

OBX: I thought that only the thread starter and a Moderator can lockup a thread. No other poster other than the starter can close the thread unless he/she requests so from a Mod.

Very nice Bobby. I am now even more hell bent on scoring some more older tumbled finish GSOs! Thank you for sharing.

If you're having some trouble with your browser, you might have inadvertently locked it. You're a paid member, so you have that ability, and also usually a mod will comment before a lock.

You should be able to check by clicking into the thread in question, and then click on the 'administrative' drop down and see if it gives you the option to 'open thread.'

Great suggestion!!! It works and the thread has been reopened!
