The Delica Effect

The Delica is somewhat a demonstration of CQI or Kaizen. Continual improvement based on customer response. Those little tweaks that occur as a result of interaction with the customer's thoughts.

I can appreciate that as there are always kaizen projects happening at my workplace. Spyderco really seems to be on the ball as far as manufacturing, so kudos there. I'd imagine spyderco is a fun place to work if you're interested in engineering and manufacturing like I am.

Anyhow, might I offer a small suggestion with regards to improving the delica, the spyder hole machining has been reported to be a little rough - leaving a sharp lip around the hole, and my recently purchased delica is also that way. It could be improved. I'm not really complaining since I don't have sensitive hands, but I could see it being an issue for less 'work hardened' types.

Thanks for offering such well thought out and useful products!

Thanx Fanucman,

We use Fanuc's.

The sharp edge on the hole is intentional. Finding just the right amount of "sharpness" is challenging with different makers, especially with so many models.

Really dig this quote.
Great use of Kaizen, or improvement! :D
Kinoubi is another word I have been heavily relating to Spyderco outlook and products, and I hope you would agree, Sal. :)
The Delica is undoubtedly the epitome of both of these. And at an incredible value.

It's often a sleeper, though. Many will shallowly overlook it, but it will draw you back again and again once it's put to use. Threads like this time and again prove this.

I often carry two knives, telling myself it's for utility and variety purposes... then on days where all I grab, or all I pull out for use, is a Delica, I often question myself why I am carrying more than one knife. Then I just come back to the reasoning that is simply fun, not necessary, to justify my madness of owning and carrying multiple knives when one Delica would get most jobs done.

That makes sense that it's intentional, and it's definitely understandable that it's a fine line. Thanks for clearing that up.

Delica is my most carried and used Spyderco. I work in a school district so got to be low key.
Size is big enough to do most tasks, but small enough not to draw a lot of unwanted attention.

This happened to me. I had a PM2, Millie, Sage 1 and Dragonfly. The Delica kicked them all out.

If I had to choose one Spyderco it would be Delica hands down without a second thought. It just works.

I have knives costing 5x as much, but the humble Delica is one that keeps ending up in my pocket time and time again.

Thanx for the translation. Not a word we've used, but a philosophy that is core to our company.

I don't own any delica's right now. The knife entirely stunts my knife fun.

There's just something about it. If I reach into my knife drawer it didn't matter if it was my crk, other Spyderco or what, I would naturally slip the Delica in my pocket almost 10 out of 10 times. It's just an too much of an lightweight, easy going, convenient and 85 percent of the time capable knife.

How about another related Japanese word starting with a 'K' that epitomizes a Spyderco design trait ... Kanso. A basic design principle based on Zen philosophy. Meaning “simplicity,” but simplicity that is achieved by eliminating the non-essential. In Sal's words"No more than necessary, no less than perfect."

The Delica is my #1 folder of all time. Just love it in Superblue. I'll go with a pacific salt if I'm in or around the water, but it's the Delica for everything else. I got rid of a lot of knives because of that little fella!

Delica all the way here also! Just does everything I need in a great package. Just ordered a purple one actually lol. Enablers!

I must say, my first "real" knife was a sabre ground delica, but I sold it not too long after I got it to fund a PM2.

That was almost two years ago, and I just bought another delica, the HAP40 sprint and absolutely love that blade. Comfortable full four finger grip, super light, thinly ground uber slicer blade profile, an excellent EDC. Loved it so much that I immediately ordered a grey vg10 variant as soon as my HAP40 arrived. Great little knife!

I feel like I can sense the design tweaks and improvements that have gone into it over the years.

The Delica effect is very real. It's a knife that has caused me to sell knives over 8 times its cost. It's a knife that gets it right and just works. I have a gray VG-10 at home I leave in the kitchen with its clip off as a general use knife, and I'm always marveling at how lightweight and functionally and ergonomically perfect the knife is. I can drop it in my pocket and not give a crap about banging it up. I can use it and just enjoy it, and it's my knife of choice for getting out on the lake. Haven't carried the HAP40 yet though, loving the Stretch at the moment.

Someone here got it right when they said owning a Delica sucks the fun out of your other knives because I'll hold a Delica in one hand and a knife 8 times the cost in the other and say to the costlier knife, "why do I have you again?"

The Delica is like that girl who was a friend for years who was no beauty queen but had personality, a sense of humor, could cook a 5 star meal, and was nearly a better shot than you at the range. You had your encounters on occasion but could never commit to her, always with your eye on the 10s who were all looks and no substance, having a month long relationship at most and ending up with a noticeably lighter wallet by then. In the end though, you always come crawling back to Old Faithful because inside you know it just feels right.

I also find the edge on the hole a little too sharp for my personal comfort.
Rather have it that way,,, very easy to deburr slightly with a round diamond file to my liking.

Fantastic design and great quality control.

FK

Better to come too sharp than too rounded or chamfered.

Forgot to add, although I love the knife, I don't think it's the best carry in a clipped configuration and either go with a spaceman clip or no clip. For the light weight, I think the wire deep carry would be a great choice. If that ever happens, well I'm just gonna have to buy more.
