The economy and custom knives

I say bullshit, STeven.
The problem exists. That people discuss the symptoms of the problem is good for others who are looking for some meaning in what they are seeing around them.

Say what you want Lorien.

The problem MAY exist, or it may be exacerbated by dumbasses perpetuating the IDEA of a problem that doesn't exist.

NOT ONE of the collectors that I know WHO BUY will stop buying knives because of the economy......college funds may be underfilled and vacations may be local instead of international, but frikkin knives will still get bought, and shows will go on.

If you don't already actively buy custom knives, then you might not start this week.

ah lorien, the guy who started the "aftermarket in the toilet thread"
are you even a collector, and if so, what makers do you buy that has you so worried?

I hope that you can see the harm you are doing, and why others resist it...I also hope that it is on purpose, for some hidden agenda, rather than a foolish blunder.

If you think that one persons thread can do harm to the custom knife collecting world , you put way too much weight in what you read online.

I highly doubt you will see anyone pointing fingers at Keith in the next issue of Blade for the fall of the custom knife collecting world.

When you see large corporations laying off people , and major auto manufactures struggling , you can be dam sure there is going to be some trickle down effect. It may not be to the small percentage of high end collectors with money to spare , but to the collector who may buy 1-3 pieces per year , I would say the economy will indeed effect them.

To hinder discussion , will not make the problem go away. :thumbdn:

:

I don't, John, but I believe that each of us is an ambassador to collecting in our own way, and mine has become a lot more visible this year, thusly changing my perception of the net.

It could drive away a couple of collectors who are bad enough on the fence as it is, just one thread like this.

At least from where I sit...I'm done with this one.

Many economic models are based on consumer confidence in the markets.

The reality is discretionary spending will be effected when one dollar invested in the stock market last year is now worth 60 cents.

Some knife markets will be hurt.
The overflow will spill into some custom areas.

IMO, it ain't brain surgery. :)

Like Mike Lovett said....my high end orders have made up for my low and mid range market. Not that my business breakdown has any bearing either positive or negative on the discussion here.

I don't usually get into discussions like this... partly because I am fairly ignorant to the finer points of the stock market. I DO know that there are good buys both on the stock market and in custom knives. As one radio announcer said....tomorrows millionaires are buying today.

Steven has a valid point. I do believe that if the panic attitude spreads, via this forum or any other type of media, it will do more harm than good. A bucket is filled one drop at a time. I've said before to many people that I am just not that alarmed by the current economic situation. I am being cautious, but not to the point I have shut down my spending.

Gents, it's a forum and it's very essence calls for (civil) discussion. (Otherwise we could just show images.)

I don't think anyone has (yet) pulled a Chicken Little and claimed the sky is falling. As I mentioned in my first post in this thread I voted with my dollars this weekend and it wasn't an insignificant investment (by my standards).

I don't think rational discussion is going to cause any undue tidal wave effect. And any point of view out on the fringe (so to speak) is normally brought into focus via the lens of other opinions.

I see. There seems to be many that are of the opinion that if you don't talk about stuff like this, it will somehow lessen the blow, or that it won't happen at all, and that discussing it will make it worse.

Okay then, I am going to shut this thread down.
