That is seriously a very good, well-written story.

Have you ever considered collecting your various stories into a book of short stories?
They are written well enough and have the proper mix of entertainment and nostalgia to work.

If you've never thought of it before, I say go for it. :)

Do not go gentle into that good night. / Rage, rage against the dying of the light. (Dylan Thomas)

Thanks again Carl.

Another great story Carl. I appreciate the time you take to write these, because I gain pleasure from reading them.

Smoke got in my eyes there for a minute. Way to go Sam! Living the last of your life on your terms.

I'm fairly sure this has been mentioned to Carl on many occasions over the years, right here in this forum. Another nudge can't hurt though ....... :)

Great story Carl. I am new to the traditional forum so this is the first one for me. I'll need to use the search to find the others. Thanks for sharing!!

Look for Jackknife’s Tales in the stickes at the top of the Traditional subforum.

Where does a man like Sam go wrong with his own kids? I mean I really hate that money grubbing family of his. I just wanted to smack the granpaaaaaaw dude round the side of his mohawked head.
That was a great story.
Cheers Carl.

This reminds me of my own Grandfather who would escape from the place I had to get him into for the last 2 years of his life. After my grandfather's kids grabbed everything of value they could get their hands on they ignored him and left him to fend for himself. I ended up taking care of him for the last five years of his life with no help from anyone in the family. It is a very hard and expensive task to take care of ageing loved ones. I'd do it again in a New York minute. Not all of us grandkids are so bad. :)

Very well written story, a sad one but sometimes true. One hopes that most people have a better sense of family and of responsibility than that shown in the story...but sometimes greed gets in the way.:(
