Guys, thanx for kind words!
Back to the original topic, most of the "tactical folders" need flipping wrist motion from the first moment of opening it. The wrist motion is quite obvious to anybody around.
Contrary, opening a balisong in single flip from horizontal position is a very small motion. It's bacause half of the rotation is done by gravity. Only you have to do is to release your grip (hardly noticeable) to let the handle fall down, then pull up your wrist to ASSIST the handle coming upward.
A well trained bali opening can be hardly noticeable until it' fully open. For me it's easy if I can start from the ideal horizontal holding position in my palm. (Some practice for preparation each time is needed also)
I'm sure you will be able to do it with slighter motion, from any position to start.
My point is that if nobody can see you open your balisong, you'll have infinite speed virtually. There's no starting signal for the draw in real life. You don't have to start it from inside the sheath (or pocket)! You can draw and hole it into your palm formerly, into the "ready" position in case needed! I don't know how this applies to self defense situation. My "real life" is to surprise my friends by a knife suddenly shows up in my hand. But it works at least for me.
As a wrong friend, I have to add one advise. Grip the latched / dangerous / wrong handle and you'll have the bali in right direction when it's open. I've learned it through experience. My right middle finger aches at the joint in rainy day after three years now.
anagarika, you live closest to equator... you are the champ unless somebody succeeds in bringing a bali into an airplane from west to east!
