Those old “Black Box” Winchesters are hard to beat. Very nice Gary!

Question for Signalprick Signalprick and others in the know. How hard are stainless shields? Can I bring a knife to a local trophy store or jewelry shop to have it engraved, or should I send it off to one of the craftsmen here.

I'm not sure what the exact rockwell hardness is but 410 is pretty soft. 416 is as well unless it's been hardened. I would think though someone who knows how to engrave could do it. What are you wanting done/knife. Maybe it could be laser engraved?

Thanks. I finally bit the bullet and picked up a Norfolk. If the size and weight work for me, I'd want the shield engraved with a simple cross.

If im recalling correctly, the Case Bose collabs with ebony wood have a NS shield. Just something to be aware of if yours is ebony. I have no idea how the NS would work with engraving or laser engraving. One idea would be to buy a small sheet about .050 thou thick and have your engraver practice on it before attempting the real deal.

There is engraving and engraving.
Hardened steel can be engraved with diamond.
A metal shield can be engraved with a pantograph or by hand by a talented person.
