It really was amazing. Honestly the best steak I have ever eaten. Literally melted in your mouth.Nathan the Machinist
That steak was amazing. Nice charcoal flavor and one of the best rubs I've had. Any chance of sharing the secret rub recipe?
My brother said he would exchange a muscular back rub for the rub.
Think this is a good spot to say this, I think.
Most of you probably don’t have any idea who I am (that’s on purpose - I really like to lay low), and I’m also thinking a lot of you probably don’t know I make knives now and again (sporadically enough to question whether or not I’m a knifemaker).
I spend a lot of time ribbing Nate, usually about goofy stuff like his pricing (it’s too low), or his myriad assortment of Ford trucks in various states of operability. What you don’t maybe know is that this little subforum is about the only place I choose to do any level of social interaction, and despite me jesting at Nate’s expense, it’s because of who Nate and his family and crew are.
They’re my friends. For a whole bunch of reasons, but one of the really big reasons is that they’re really good people. Actual, real, good, people.
We joke a lot, and often in a very off-color fashion, but that’s not the sort of good I’m talking about. They are ethical, caring people, and fool enough to embrace me as someone worth talking to. They make ethical business choices, shrewd choices, that I don’t see many other knifemakers have or (especially) knifemaking companies making. The weird thing is, I actually have a perspective on this, because despite being an almost unknown, I somehow seem to talk to a LOT of knifemakers and companies involved in the industry. The Carothers crew have a genuine interest in treating their customers well, and fairly, and it’s important to them that the work they do lives up to their claims, and that their customers are truly appreciated by them.
I CHOSE to drive eleven hours straight to visit. It was really important for me to be here, this weekend, because I want to support these people.
Because they’re my friends.
…and no, I didn’t write this because someone gave me candy last night.
I was going to joke about Matt being wasted, but it was so damn heartfelt I couldn't bring myself to do it.Sorry I was not able to make it, I waited until Wednesday to finally make the call but a puppy at home, double header softball game Saturday, two NFL Flag Championship games Sunday and my wife getting sick (not bad, but enough that I would not leave her to manage everything else) forced my hand.
No drunken debauchery, but at least I got to watch this happen
These girls played for 10 weeks in an 8 team league of 10-12 year olds, were undefeated and only gave up three touchdowns the entire season.

Lol. Had similar thoughts.I was going to joke about Matt being wasted, but it was so damn heartfelt I couldn't bring myself to do it.
So...ditto.
Did you see my post about meeting you??¿???¿…and, outside of the occasional cigar, my only vice is one truly serious cup of coffee every morning. I’m afraid all of my words come from a sober mind.
Suppose that doesn’t mean it’s a sane mind, or even a clean one, though.
Several points about the weekend, in retrospect.
-the folks that showed up were pretty good people. Most were very good people.
-those that brought their wives showed me that I’m not alone in having a woman that, for whatever fool reason, tolerates my bullshit, and I don’t deserve her. Not only were all of these women beautiful, but they were also deeply intelligent, engaging, and apparently entirely oblivious to the incredibly bad taste they have in men.yoko
PolRoger
CPK Mark and Bennieboo, I’m looking at you. Thankfully, my own bride is exactly this blind, as well.
-Jo’s collard greens were the highlight of the meal. I know I’m risking death threats over this, as Nate’s steaks were damn good, but I would eat those collard greens every day, if I could. Fabulous.
-I had many conversations, with so many of you, and got to actually know some of you in a really short span of time, and that was among the best parts of this, for me.
-the heat down there sucks. All day Saturday I was paralyzed. Just wanted to die. Was, in fact, waiting to die. I don’t know what the hell is wrong with all of you, but the south is completely inhospitable.
-I don’t make enough knives, and this really frustrates people. I knew this, but it was really pointed out to me, here.
-Scrimgeour is a fabulous grinder. Inspiring and intimidating. When I grow up I want to be able to grind like him.
-Jo does everything. I mean, I think everyone has an idea about how much she does, but they’re wrong. She does way more. I don’t understand how she keeps going. A true force of nature. And I adore her.
-it was totally awesome getting to finally meet Eric (fonedork) and Bo. We’ve been in a text group for a while now, and although I knew they were both pretty cool, I didn’t really KNOW them. Eric is funny as hell. Bo was so much more awesome than I had ever imagined - wish I could actually spend more time with him. Wicked cool guy.
-there were people that weren’t there, that I wish had made it.
-there are some people I will try to be more in contact with. I’m a hermit, by default, and I was isolating long before it was made cool with a pandemic. Once again, I’m a trendsetter and all you dumb bastards gotta copycat me… Anyway, there were way too many times I heard the prefix ‘elusive’ before my name. Perhaps I’m being too elusive.
-I am now completely convinced thatRichard338 hates me, and will go out of his way to do anything to not have to talk to me, including getting sick so he doesn’t have to see me at Ashokan this year, and eating something from Eric, which everyone at this point knows not to do. Clearly, he despises me.
-Grenock is fucking hysterical. You are yet one more person that I would have been separated from in school, guaranteed, my friend.
-there were a handful of guys that asked really thoughtful questions about making knives. I hope each of them pursues it, and if I can help, I’ll try to.
-Nate’s one of my favorite people
No.... but me and a few other members heard Nathan squealing in excitement at the end of the driveway when he showed up lolSpeaks volumes of the quality and the caliber of people that this Carothers Family of Moorseville, NC are as a nucleus and the type of people who they have attracted around them Some of us for various reasons, are unable to attend these events but live vicariously through the experiences of those who can.
Mr. G's appearance and attendance was plotted and planned by his esteemed passenger and AFAIK, less than a handful were privy to this pleasant secret because as Matt had mentioned, he is quite reclusive. I am hoping that Nathan was truly surprised to see Matt in person at the compound. I wonder if anyone snapped a photo?
