the frn fan thread

If I can't have stainless bolsters and natural material scales, then FRN is my next choice. G-10 and CF are just more expensive ways of saying "plastic" in my book. Micarta has a bit more going for it, but FRN will get the job done nicely.

I like FRN. I prefer G-10, but because the price differences it's probably a better overall value.

I have been a fan of FRN ever since Gerber started using it for their LST series. FRN is still my favorite handle material for folding knives. I think that most of the gripes with FRN stem from the fact that it looks and feels like cheap plastic. I have always liked the way FRN feels myself and I very much appreciate its light weight and incredible durability.

Some people think G10 looks and feels cheap. It's all subjective. Performance, however, is objective. FRN performs consistently. There's really no way to argue with that.

Personally, I think that some of the aluminum and stainless handles on the market look cheaper than their FRN counterparts. Improvements in texture also have the corollary benefit of making them look fancier, IMO. If a great deal of effort was put into making them look more expensive, it would certainly be possible. But would there really be a point to it?

I still prefer G10 and Micarta in the hand, but will never snub my nose at FRN.

yeah, for a working knife its hard to beat FRN esp. when its' got 3-D swells and groovy bidirectional texturing.......I really like the E4/D4 handles....
