The full story on the Sebenza GAW - knives 4ever / james knivelover

Thanks for all support, advise and wondefull offers. You guys Rock.
I'll pass on the septic tank design study, thanks ;)
I've started my own little fund but it never reaches it's intended goal, life gets in the way usually :D

The whole thing makes me feel kind of stupid/naive that I actually believed the guy in the first place.
If something sounds too good to be true it usally is...

Live and learn!

Just remember; a real member of BFC will give away what he says he will give away.

A POS will not

Wait... The OP actually thought that GAW was real? Hahaha, that's pretty funny. Well to be fair quite a lot of other people probably thought it was real too. :)

I am an old dog and really know one knows who I am other than what you see written here. Do any of us really know each other? That being said one builds that trust through longevity and honorable behavior. A man's word used to mean something. To me it still very much does. To post a GAW, choose a 'Winner' and then disappear is Despicable and the member should be banned. Hands down. I'm not anybody special but if I say it I mean it. Shouldnt we all be that way?
All one should have to do during any GAW is post the question "Is this real?" and if no other member on that thread or Moderator assigned to that thread comes on to say 'Yes, it is." Then maybe its not.
One thing this experience does suggest is perhaps there should be some set rules for a Blade Forum give away. Like what to do if a minor wins? In my case I rece ived very good advice from Marcinek, Codger 64, Legion 12, jc57, RWS, Esav Benyamin, Kiah, Kardah and Glockman 99. I sought this out myself as I wanted the GAW to be an enjoyable experience for everybody and I didn't want to do anything to take away from the integrity of this forum so naturally I hosted it in Whine & Cheese. Naturally....:D

This is what we term as being malicious behavior. Knives4free will be banned if this does turn out to be a hoax. It more than likely is. Bottom line is that we don't have time for this kind of crap. If he wanted to do a giveaway, that is not a problem, it did not have to be a "Sabenza", it could have been anything. It's not about the item, it's about the feeling of generosity behind it that matters and wanting to give back to a community that discusses knives and other stuff.

If some one posts a GAW we should all feel it's real because it should be real because to openly lie to the forum on any thread should NEVER be tolerated. Period. And that's the whole point. There needs to be some very serious consideration given to setting up some hard core GAW rules and what to do and what members should expect to see happen when some fraudulent nonsense is posted. Knoefz' experience was well known and documented at the time of my GAW and there were a lot of negative comments made on those threads reffering to this particular issue during the event. The knife I gave away's final cost was $198.00 and out of all the eligible members only 11 participated. Yeah, 11. I truly believe the "fake" giveaways of the past jaded a lot of folks involved with my GAW's opinions. I am dead serious when I say that fraudulent activity damages the sense of community that BF has strived so hard to create and such activity should be grounds for immediate dismissal. A member should not have to read a post giving a knife away and stop and wonder if it's real.
Glad to see him gone. Should have been done weeks ago! Should have never been allowed to happen in the first place. Should never be allowed to happen again. That being said we need some rules on this and if a user breaks them, Infractions should occur up to and including bye bye.

I hope all the suckbutt's who tried to weasel and friendly up to knives4ever at the dangling of a free knife should hang their tails in shame as well! Just remember folks at the end of the day all this stuff just cuts things! Titanium scales and fancy schmancy steel be damned.

I was interested in participating in your GAW after seeing the length you went to trying to be generous for the kid, but there was a W&C pre requisite I didn't meet, and I would suspect that you probably got a good turn out considering it was limited to the W&C. I'm bout to revisit the thread because I'm considering getting a custom griptillian.

I don't think extensive rules for GAW would have a worthwhile payoff for the mods. People that are worthy of membership in any club aren't going to do a GAW and then not deliver - it's a guarantee to ruin your reputation, and probably get you banned. Most members can spot an insincere or theatrical GAW from a mile away though, and the doubt was as well publicized as the GAW in the instance of GAW OP won. The "Your GAW Your rules" has always worked to my knowledge, and the freedom no doubt promotes more people that genuinely want to give back to jump in and do it. The cynicism you encountered is just par for the course around here, I don't think it was necessarily apathy for giveaways.

There will always be spurrious GAWs and inane threads. The membership here is open, knives start becoming a hobby for a lot of people when they're in their early teens, there just isn't a very high barrier of entry to this hobby - my cousin is a prison guard, and it kinda reminds me of the county jail here; the guards are stingy with courtesy because of the relatively high percentage of slag that they are faced with. It makes it so nobody ever has as positive experience as possible if the general population had a higher barrier of entry (like you couldn't go to jail unless you graduated high school, have car insurance, or passed an entrance exam. Pretty much any barrier will decrease the rejects - you would be really surprised at how much worse it would be if people could join with Yahoo accounts or providing no email account at all). Luckily, there are sections of the site (traditionals, custom area, becker subforum) that have developed their own community within a community. The investment it takes to become a trusted member of a more isolated community means that they don't have to suffer as many fools, and it acts as its own barrier. They make for suitable sanctuaries from the general population.

We have no interest in policing give aways, at all, really. If someone wants to give something away, by all means be our guest. However, if you want to try and BS the community, you are going to get the same as this guy did. Adults should not have to have babysitters. If adults do not know how to conduct themselves, then they really have no business here.
