The Garud Ang Khola. Take a look at this one.

The kamis are generally illiterate and so am I in Nepali so I go along with whatever they say. If I try to call it something else they won't know what I'm talking about when I try to order it so I've got to stick with the Garud Ang Khola or we might end up getting a pig's head on the handle.

But you are right about the Garuda.

And, ruel, if you want one send me an email confirmation of your order with your mailing address and I'll get you one. I am having a couple more made but we probably won't see them until January.

I think a pig's head would be kind of neat, actually! It would definitely be unique -- we always see eagle, lion, elephant, etc. pommels, but never a pig.

I will send you an e-mail shortly.

Thanks,
ruel

There is a discipline of Bando called the Boar System. One of my very old pals and customers practices this system. Some years back he special ordered some khukuris with a boar engraved on them. The kamis got a great kick out of this and asked, "what sort of person would want a pig engraved on the blade of their khukuris?" I did not try to answer. I just said, "you know how crazy Americans are."

Khukuri FAQ

I'm curious: I keep hearing Bando come up with regard to Kukris. What exactly is the connection? I'm guessing that there was some contact between Burma and Nepal, either directly or through the mutually adjacent lands of Bengal and Assam. Is this something recent, or have Kukris been in Burma for some time?

Ruel, go to this link and see what you think.

Wouldn't that pig gargoyle head make a fearsome pommel for a 24" sirupati? ( PS - just got this little piggy home half an hour ago ).

And for god's sake don't anyone let Vampire Gerbil know about that site!

Hey Rusty, I have that exact same gargoyle too! It's definitely the right size...

Originally, though, I was thinking of a more Indian look, perhaps one of the Pig/Boar headed Hindu or Buddhist Gods such as Vishnu's avatar Varaha (Skt. 'boar') or the Tantric Buddhist Vajravarahi or Marici. But I'm not too particular...(-:

Ruel, I would definitely agree ( I think ) if
I had the foggiest notion what you are talking about. ROTFLMAO

Back when we were talking about Hanuman a long time ago on a different forum, someone posted links to a couple pictures of the little rascal. Don't remember who, but if you're still out there and you know what ruel is talking about, let the enlightenment begin!

If only I could get my scanner to work, I could put some very good pictures up. As it is, I am reduced to some links with pix from a random web search. I've only been able to find pix of Varaha, so you'll just have to take my word on the others! (I can list some good book references if you really want to see 'em.)

1. Here's a modern painting and description of Varaha. Strangely, he is missing the mace (Sanskrit 'gada') that is normally his specific weapon: http://members.tripod.com/srinivasp/mythology/vara.html

2. Here are a group of Varaha sculptures, though it's hard to make out the details: http://www.investindia.com/varaha.html

3. This is Varaha (with mace) vs. his demon enemy with another written description: http://www.goloka.com/docs/gallery/varaha01.html

Ruel, why am I not surprised? An affinity for the porcine and maces too?

After months of telling the rest of the forum I kept a mace behind the truck seat, I dropped by the HI Reno StageStop with two Chainpuris for Bill to take pictures of, and realized that I might as well let him make a pic of the mace too.

Let those who question my veracity click on the url. Those who question my sanity may have a point, however.

That's OK Rusty.

We wouldn't want sane people posting here anyway.

1. Hopefully, the X-mas/NY's break will give me time to get the scanner all figured out.

2. Hey Rusty, your mace looks like it's seen some use. Do you have any 'war stories' about it? (I really like that 20" Chainpuri also.)
