I just tried to buy a knife from a company which doesn't seem to want to make it easy for customers to order from them. The company is DLT Trading. They require one to sign-in with a userid and password in order to place an order. Apparently I had done this once before, because when I tried to register as a new customer, I got an error message saying that I was already registered, and had to sign-in with my password. Of course, I have no idea what password I might have used to order from them previously.

Looking around the website, I could find no contact information to ask for assistance. So, now I cannot buy anything from DLT Trading.

It is rediculous how so many companies are now requiring customers to register and use passwords before they can order online. Who is going to remember all of those passwords? Then these sharp folks at DLT Trading provide no way of finding out one's password or contacting them for assistance. So, effectively, no one who orders from DLT Trading and subsequently forgets their password will ever be able to order from them again!

Well, I spoke too soon. I finally found a link for forgotten passwords in fine print on the sign-in page. I had been looking for the usual "Contact Us" link one normally sees on websites.

I still don't like the current trend of making people establish password protected accounts to order from online sellers. No one can remember all the passwords from every company they do business with. It just creates extra hastle when one tries to place an order.

BTW - while DLT Trading does have a "Password forgotten?" link, it does not appear to work. I submitted my e-mail address and a message was displayed saying that a new password had been sent to my e-mail. However, I did not receive any e-mail from them.

If you didn't recall setting up a username and password, you must have tried a username that was in use, then they sent "the password" to the e-mail account of that actual (set up prior) user.

Probably the best thing to have done is simply create a new account, pick a unique password and move on, if you wanted to order.

Most companies do that so they don't end up with duplicate records in their database, sending out newsletters etc, and truly credit card fraud is huge now, they want a bit more "on" who is coming in to order, a bit more certainty they can try and find you if the card gets charged back bogus etc etc.

But that's what it sounds like here, you punched in a username that was in use and the confirming password went to a person who had that name in use, if you are stable on the addresses you would have ever given out earlier. Good luck etc,

I won't buy from anyone/where I have to "sign up' or that does not supply an address AND a phone number that an actual human being answers the phone.

DLTs website is not the best, but the people there are great(I have used them on 3 seperate occasions). Just need to tweak there site imho.

I don't think the problem is that my username is already taken, because the username is my e-mail address, and nobody else has that.

I don't know where the e-mail with my "new password" went, but I know I didn't get it. And I never found any way to contact DLT Trading to tell them about the problem.

So, those guys are cutting themselves off from repeat business.

With that additional focusing info, yep, sounds like their system is snakebit indeed. Very frustrating when you are a willing buyer and the vendor makes it difficult!

W.T.Beck, email me at ebhausman (at) gmail (dot) com and I can put you in touch with them. DLT has been having serious hosting problems with their website.

I know that this looks to long to read, but we hope you will. DLT’s reply to the questions and concerns of W.T. Beck and other customers that have had problems with our site. Someone did already mention that DLT had hosting problems. You will have problems to work out with all new web sites. The hosting problem was just the start of it. We change our web site form its old format to this new format on 9/1/05. It took hours and hours for us to update the new site with all the new products that BRK&T was pumping out. Plus we added other new items. Then came November 18th. 2005, the server crashed. We lost about half of our inventory off the site. No one had a current backup. So we had to spend hours and hours to replace everything. We had many small problems that we were still working out. Then about 1/15/06 the server crashed again. Still no current backup. We were lucky this time we only lost about a third of the inventory. So, many hours later we had that replaced. We are now on a new server with a new hosting company and with daily backups. We did have a contact page on web site with all that vital information like address, phone numbers and e-mail addresses to contact. Then about the first part of February the spammers hit our web site. The only way they could get their spam to us was thru our contact page. We were getting about 200 e-mails a day from them. We took our contact page off until we could figure out how to stop them. We know that this has caused hardships for our customers that want to contact us. We do send out e-mails about sale items in which most customers would have our e-mail address. We are going to put the contact page back on and we’ll see what happens. I also have instructed our web site girl to put the toll free phone number on the home page in place of the notice that we were having technical difficulties or maybe with it.
Concerning the the registering with user names and passwords, they do have a lot to do with id theft and security but on our site it will also let you check the history of your orders. I remember registering and signing in on this blade forums site. I think I had to put in my birth date user name and password. Almost every place you go to order on line or do anything online you’ll have to register or at least have a user name and password. As far as remembering your password, If you come to this site so often that you have a thousand posts, maybe you should use the same password at DLT as you do here. Or you could do like I do because I’m stupid, write it down on a sticky and put it on back of the computer. We did have an issue when a customer request a new password the site is not sending it to them, it was sending it to us. I was just told that was fixed. I guess some believe that we spend hours & hours and $’s & $’s to make our customers life and ordering process difficult, well we don’t. Our old site was not as good as this new site and probably wasn’t as secure as this one. We just want to provide our customers with good pricing, great service and the best secured site possible to place their orders (stupid DLT, what were we thinking). We want to thank all of our customers for their patience during the past six months that we have been working on this new site. The crashes really set us back, but we will get it right. We apologies for all the inconvenience. The DLT Team- Larry, Mary and Donna.

Sorry to hear about your computer problems. Hope they are fixed soon, before you sell out of those Bark River Teddy knives. I want to buy one.

I checked the DLT site again this morning. They've fixed the forgotten password link. I was able to get a new password and order the Bark River Teddy knife.

I've been hoping for a long time that Bark River would make some knives with ample guards. I haven't bought many Bark River knives in the past because the great majority of them have little or no guard. Now they finally have a model with the kind of guard I like. I hope this won't be the only one.
