The "Good Deed" Give-a-way thread

Thanks for the chance! :)

My good deed is two-fold. My son was drawn for his first turkey tag ever this year, so today I spent most of the afternoon and evening taking him out to try to fill his tag. He also ended up with a second bleached deer skull the first was a nice buck, today's was a doe. So I am trying to get him into hunting more and out enjoying nature. We did this after we both did a good deed for the community today as it was the Scouts food drive pickup day. We spent part of the morning picking up food donations and delivering them to the drop off site. So it was a good day for all! :)

I am one of 5 volunteer archery instructors at a local archery club. We give free lessons to any and all interested in learning archery. A month ago, we kicked off the season by giving lessons to a bunch of boy scouts.

I also teach archery at our local rec. center. I am organizing volunteers who are interested in coaching. They are serving as assistant coaches in return for free shooting time at the range, instruction from me and small stipends ( I am sharing my teaching fees with some of them.)

I hope to start a scholarship program so that kids and families can shoot even when they can't afford the rec. center fees.

The skinner looks like a great knife to pass along to one of the volunteer assistant coaches as a thank you gift.

While in school and disabled it is hard to do physical nice things (but nice that nobody has asked me to help them move in 2 years!), especially after being the one who could move 300+ pound valves by hand all day. As a result I have to be nice in another way. In the last 3 months I have given away 6 knives to (hopefully) deserving individuals. It is actually as a direct result of Bladeforums too- I never considered that this community would give away their collections!!! The best was the son of a couple of friends. His dad grew up in the Yukon and he lived a bush lifestyle for many years. After getting to know me he started to carry a Gerber EZ Out (PE- lucky sod). Last year his son (15) also started carrying a CCC folder, but one that had decent lockup on the liner and an adequate edge. He was never really proud to show the knife to anybody and I felt that that needed to change. I took out a selection of my folders, and let him have his choice. What I did not realize was I put my Damascus Leek in the pile- oops. Guess which one he selected??? Yep, but I had to give him enough humming and hawing to impress upon him what kind of knife he was getting. Being a really good guy I knew he would take good care of it (he won't even drink!) but wanted to put my head over his shoulder every time he considered doing something wrong with it. It has turned out incredible- he carries it everywhere appropriate, and takes better care of it than I do many of mine. His appreciation is more than enough for me, I know that it is there and won't be pushed aside.

On a global scale I clear out street drains in our neighbourhood periodically. Growing up on a farm that bordered a slough meant we would cut drainage channels across our driveway constantly growing up and it has been ingrained to free up trapped water (kind of like a reverse beaver). I "walk" with a Crawford survival staff every day so when I notice that a drain has a buildup of gravel/detritus on it I poke it clean to allow water to flow off of the street. It isn't much but is something that I have never noticed anybody else do and it makes me feel useful again!

I also carry rubber gloves around with me to dispose of needles/ condoms if I find them- I feel it is better me finding and moving them than my daughter or little cousins.

It is hard to talk good about ones self, I tried this on a giveaway too, but I think that it helps us to put the positives to light when we do focus on the good in ourselves, and gives us an ego boost, which more people honestly need.

Thank you
Kris

Carolina - That is awesome, I love to hear about people getting kids intersted in the outdoors. I tried to get my nephew interested but all he wants to do is play video games and eat.

I think it benefits the neighbors more than the kids. They're an elderly couple and they're fostering 3 boys, ages 15, 15, and 14. The need someone to get the boys out of their hair once in a while. I love fishing with them, cause I can teach them about the outdoors and the different animals, especially birds, that we see. When we play basketball, I'm reminded that even though I'm not old yet, there's a big difference between 15 and 30.

I will post a pic or so when I get home around 0700 but I wanted to go ahead and throw up my "good deed" as a reminder to me. Sometime in March I carried out the first student-led operation to perform light environmental remediation in the Balcones Canyonlands Wildlife Preserve. What this means is I took a handful of college kids, got all of the necessary paperwork arranged, and led them into protected federal land to pick up years and years worth of construction debris, trash and dead organic material.

The purpose was threefold. First and foremost was to help my fellow college students at Concordia University at Austin take some ownership for their campus. The second was to demonstrate to the administration, the county, the state, the fed and our fellow students the responsibility we had and that we could be trusted to enter such sensitive natural habitats. The third was to preserve and enhance the nesting grounds for both the Golden-Cheeked Warbler (Dendroica chrysoparia ) with only a few thousand birds left and the Black Capped Vireo (Vireo atricapilla) again, with only a handful of surviving species.

The daylong project was a huge success, we filled my truck a number of times and flagged areas of concern that we needed to address later on.

This event also gave me the needed momentum to start a club on campus to work in our Preserve and work around the campus to perform perioic environmental maintenance.

Oh...and I started the Pay-It-Forward thread...So I win...I will send you my address :D kidding, of course...I want to thank everyone who participates in that thread. It really says alot about the folks on here...

Kris - Good on ya, bro! That's what's this thread is all about! Do you really find that many condoms and needles up there? People can be idiots... sheesh...

Rat - That's awesome that an elderly couple will still take foster children in and expend so much energy doing so.

Doug - The Pay-it-forward thread was what got me thinking abou this thread.

Ya'll will notice that I haven't posted my good deed yet. I'm waiting to create a new one. I volunteer pretty regularly and also captain a team in the Relay for Life every year but I want to do something spontaneous and good. We are heading to the beach, yes, in the rain today so I'll be around plenty of people and the coastline so we'll see what happens :)

It's great to see this thread taking off.

I give free safety and shooting lessons every month for local kids with thier parents present. They are the next generation of our shooters, and we all want them being safe right out the gate.

Cool contest! I have done several good things for the environment. Most recently, I participated in cleaning up our town around and local river. I also have participated in the adopt a highway program.

Thanks for doing this!

Yesterday I was training new recruits for our city's Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), of which I am a volunteer team leader (I believe fully in giving back to the community that gives so much to me). When I finished the training I was driving back with my family when my wife noticed somebody on the ground, who had obviously fallen off their bike and was surrounded by 3 college girls trying to help. I grabbed my trauma kit and went to help. According to the girls he had fallen off of his bike, tried to stand up and fell again, hitting his head. I noticed right away his slurred speech, which could have meant a possible head injury, diabetes, etc. or alcohol. I asked if he was intoxicated and he admitted to drinking a quarter of a bottle of whiskey and that he was on psychiatric meds. He also admitted that he had just gotten out of the psychiatric hospital the day before after being arrested by the police. I had the girls step back, confiscated the knife clipped into his pocket (Chinese special, nothing exciting guys), stabilized his spine and started evaluating him while talking with the 911 dispatcher.

Long story short, police, firefighters and EMTs arrived and took over. I briefed them of the situation, his vitals, etc, handed over the knife to the police and was informed that he was known to the police and was dangerous and that they were looking for someone who fit his discription because several people reported that someone was riding by on a bike and smacking them in the back of the head. Anyone believe in Karma?

LMAO - Good or bad person, he still needed help  Nice work.

I have honestly found few recently but many of my mothers side perpetually live in the skids so when I visit I would find something nasty probably one out of every 8-10 visits. Not a lot but way too much if you get my drift!

Finally a give away I can enter, something I have pics of.

I got this horse repoed (by the seller) before it was crippled for life. Warning: If you're an animal lover these pics will piss you off!!!

http://forum.horsetopia.com/advice-about-buying-selling-horse/108078-i-took-her-back.html

These people I know sold this horse on a lease purchase, with a contract stating it could be taken back at any time, until pay off, for negligence. Well the buyers had it 6 months and never had it's feet done. Her feet got so long that she could hardly walk and since she couldn't walk she couldn't eat so she started losing weight.

I got hold of the sellers and took them out there, the wife cried and the husband cussed. The horse is now back with the sellers and on her way to a very expensive recovery. They will have to spend more than the buyers had paid on the horse to get her back healthy but at least she can be healthy again.

Hope this qualifies

Hey David - that sounds like a horrible story. Good work getting the ole girl back to a good place.

BTW - That link prompted me for a PW.

I took an ornery 84 yr. old geezer, with whom most people I know can't get along, on a hunting trip. Even shot some game for him.

I like this Idea. I'll share my deed, but I'll sit out on the give-away.

OK maybe not too much of a good deed. Today I helped my dad with some duct work and insulation for a few hours after dinner. He knew I had homework and wanted to make sure I didn't give it up to work with him. I said I could help him out even though I have soooooo much homework to do in a week. I might even have to do a few all-nighters. But he never has help so I figured what the hell, might as well help. My fault since I should have been doing more work in the first place.

I don't know the whole story, but that sounds like there are a bunch of hilarious stories that'll come out of those interactions. :D
