Hi I live in the U.K. and would like a custom made knife from a maker in the good old US of A, however, having seen on the site that there would appear there are so many knifemakers who have given the industry a bad name, I wouldn't know who to trust, ie, giving payment up front, and possibly not even getting what I have part paid for and ordered.

Can I have some honest, good recommendations, I know it's all based on trust, but who do I approach, knowing things will go 100%

Start by reading and researching about knifemakers here and on other places on the internet. You will find that the good names stand out from the others. I am not going to mention any names for you here, but you will find tons of information. Other than that, read up on the cutlery mags out there and go to knife shows.

Welcome to BF this is a great place to learn all about it.

Greetings and welcome to BF....:)

My advice is to post your request on the custom forum http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=678
and also try and give a specific indication of what sort of custom knife you are interested in.

e.g. forged blade, tactical folder, bushcrafter, traditional sliplock folder.....etc

I have no doubt you will get many excellent suggestions.......

Best of luck with your search

Hi Bufford. Thanks for the advice, however, we here in the U.K. have very few knife shows to attend.
The only magazine we have is "Bushcraft magazine" which is a good mag, deals with bushcraft in general, and not specific knife making.
What if any knife mags can I get from the USA that would give me an inkling of an idea as to what is available, if only for makers of knives, who I could cross reference on the forum.
Thanks again. Jungleman

Hi Steven. Many thanks for you input, and I will certainly give it a try, I also see you are a Schrade fan. Many yrs ago I purchased a top of the range Browning 12 guage O.U. Shotgun, and Browning threw in a Schrade knife and sheath, which I still own, have they not gone out of business now?.

Hello Jungleman,

If you are interested in a bushcraft-type of blade then let me provide you with an invitation to the subforum - W&SS (Wilderness and Survival Skills). Maybe a bit like the mag you talked about, out subforum tends to discuss skills to a degree, but we also tend to review and profile many wilderness and survival types of knives both production and custom. There are a number of U.S., Cdn and U.K-based custom makers that regularly post and contribute to W&SS and if you post in our area you will surely get many responses.

I have personally dealt with several makers in the W&SS section and have always had very good service with them. One of the things that I have learned about buying custom knives is that those makers who participate to forums through discussions beyond just selling their own knives tend to all be very stand up folks. They have a reputation to uphold and treat their craft seriously. By participating in the on-line community, you might call this professional service to some extent. Or you just might call it good old fashion market research.

Good luck.

P.s. most people don't want to name specific makers, particularly good ones in Good/bad/ugly because there are mostly the bad and ugly posted here.

Jungleman try googling up Blade Magazine, and Knives Illistrated, and there are many others. You may be able to get a subscription for these. Foreign subscriptions may cost more, but there is a ton of info in these. However, you will also find alot of good info right here and it doesn't cost anything.

Hi jungleman,

I'm a bit confused. Are you looking to have a specific design built by a reputable maker, or are you shopping for styles?

If it's the latter, I suggest you click on my link (I'm not selling anything). You'll see plenty.

If it's for a specific design, then you need to state your needs directly. Then we could guide you better.

Welcome. :)

Check out Eddie White. He'll make your knife from your drawing or just click to buy one of his many beautiful standard models. Very talented maker, and helpful individual.

BTW there's a thing on you tube with him grinding a blade on burrking for one of their demo's...really neat.

Most reputable makers will not ask for payment up front unless you ask them to use some expensive material or to make some unique design that they feel they will not be able to sell elsewhere.
