The HI Tomahawk Project

Hearing about the resurgence in interest of the Tomahawk, what do forumites think about having BirGhorka do a Cherokee style tomahawk? Something about 20 inches long, wood engraving, silver buttcap, and quite functional. Any other suggestions most welcome!

I'm very much interested!

Seriously ¥vsa, is this feasible? In steel, of course.

Yup!!!
There is a Very large interest in 'Hawks since the movie "The Patriot" has came out!

The reason I made the smart (
biggrin.gif
) remark is that the 'Hawk everyone is really interested in _probably_ had an _English_ origin. It just so happened to belong to a Cherokee man.
biggrin.gif

I have a beautiful bronze 'Hawk that I was told was poured in the original English Mold. It has a fully functional pipe like the one in the movie, except its pipe is of a different shape. Actually it is pretty much an antique now since I have had it for about 43 years or so.

There were 3 main styles of 'Hawks. they came from England, Spain and France.

The English 'Hawk's are like what is portrayed in the movie and Blade Magazine ©.

The French 'Hawk's were similar in shape except they had a much larger head and usually a straight edge.

The Spanish 'Hawk's were more like the Spanish Battle Axe's except not as large. They usually had a rounded edge and a down turned hook on the opposite side.

Oh!! And the French also made the "Spontoon" style as well. I don't know if the other nations made that style as I haven't seen anything written on that.
The Spontoon could have either a pipe or hook on the back side.

Many 'Hawks had a "weeping or bleeding heart" in the blade.
(I have taken the liberty of making one of those in my Chainpuri blade that's finished now.
I have to sew the sheath up and then take pix, then send to Uncle Bill.
biggrin.gif
)

The most sought after 'Hawks were those made from forged or cast steel. Some were made from mallable iron. Then there were those that were made from brass and had a steel insert for the cutting edge.

Probably more than everyne wanted to know, ainnit?

Yes, Harry. It is very feasable!!!
I better make another post. BRB.

¥vsa, good info! If you have more, I and other forumites would certainly appreciate it.

Cool information Tom! A H.I. hawk would be cool. What about a war hammer? Something with a nice jagged or checkered hitting flat and a large back spike?

I admit to selfish motives for this thread though: I think that a BirGhorka Tomahawk would not only honour Nepal, but also those forumites who have Cherokee and other Native American backgrounds also.

Those who were at the Khonvention in Reno and saw the one Yvsa selected for it's spirit from a rough forged blank for me -

Was something like that what you were thinking of? Broken Arrow? Dave K? Howard? Lance? All the others who had a chance to see/fondle it?

I think that it's the perfect hawk for me, (but then it was made for me specifically).

Round here, Yvsa, some stone hawks are made using alabaster

First, there would be the question of "style" we would want.

Then.... there could be a problem if we wanted a pipe on the back side of it. The only "real" steel pipe 'Hawk that I ever had the privilege of holding and really checking out was one that belonged to a Nez Perce man that inherited it from his g'father who rode with Chief Joseph when the Nez Perce tried to make it to Canada. I can't totally recall if it had a tapered handle where the head fit onto it, but I think it did. I believe that the one he had was French due to its size. It also had the "weeping heart" in the blade. I was only about 13 when I got to check it out, but memory is still fairly good about it. Just all the little details are hard for me.

After looking at the pix in Blade Mag. it appears that the 'Hawks there have tapered handles, so perhaps it won't be as difficult as I first thought. And after skimming the article got comformation.
The difficulty would be in making the model, but I have a 'Hawk that has a tapered handle, so I could take measurements from it.

(Pardon me for sorta rambling on here. Trying to think and write at the same time right now is difficult as my sweet wife had a hose break on the truck this morning. It's supposed to be fixed, but I will worry until she gets home.)

Personally I would like a fully functional pipe 'Hawk, but wondering if the kamis could pull it off?
.....Bro?

The dimensions of the 'Hawk made for the movie are... 8 1/4" x 3" cutting edge. I can measure some of my 'Hawk's heads and go from there for a model depending on what we want.
I have 2 'Hawks with the pipe on the back side. The bronze one has a
2 5/8" cutting edge and is 6 3/4" long and the iron one also has a 2 5/8" cutting edge, but is 7 3/4" long. Both 'Hawks are glued to the handles.

Barb just made it home, so perhaps I can do better now.
biggrin.gif

So, would everyone like a 'Hawk that's in the movie or something else?
How about the "engraving" on it?
What kind of wood for the handle?

Having a "real" Cherokee Pipe 'Hawk made in Nepal sorta appeals to me.

I do "Have" to start and finish the fellow's khukuri I have here before I can start on a model though. He has been very, very patient with me.

Hope all this makes sense!!!

I can't remember what the 'Patriot' hawk looked like, but the idea of the 'weeping heart' cut-out sounds great! I've seen them and think they're beautiful - they remind me of the eye-of-the-dove (did I get that right?) cho on the chainpuri style khuks. Very beautiful. As for whether to make it pipe style or not, I'll defer to the majority.

Take your time, Bro. We can try for the pipe but if they can't do it well then we will have to toss it out.

Get a concensus of what everybody wants, a model to work from, and we'll give it a try.

The BirGorhka Cherokee Hawk. I rather like that myself! If the kamis pull it off one will go under the bed.

I think once ¥vsa has a bit of free time to do up some designs, this project will be on it's way to reality. In the meantime, if anyone has any pix or designs they want to show off for further ideas, just post them in this thread...

Here are 3 of Ed Caffrey's (no relation) Hawks:
View

I've been eyeing these for quite a while. Unfortunately, his site seems to be down so I can't give specs. The one on the left has a poll designed for hammering, while the middle one has a back spike.

Cold Steel makes several types of Hawks. I have a CS Plainsman (now discontinued) that is similar in style to their Frontier model except the butt is flattened & hardened for hammering.

I've seen Hawks with the weeping heart cut out and pipe styles, but I don't have any pics or links. I'll go along with the majority here but I would really like to see a real pipe on the back of a HI Hawk.
