I don't have a scanner, so I took some digipix (courtesy of Blade Magazine, I trust they won't mind) and placed them here:

Hope they give some food for thought.

A few nice Plains pipe hawks from the reference library (The Peacemakers by R.L. Wilson):

I didn't know Blade magazine had an article and I didn't know people on the forum were talking about it, but just in these last few days I have started getting interested in getting my hands on a light tomahawk "just like Rusty's."

Cold Steel didn't seem to have what I was looking for, so this weekend I went out to home depot and got a 12 oz. drywall hammer and a cut-off wheel for my grinder and had at it.

I removed the head from the (too short) handle and then cut off the back hammer side of the head to lighten it some. Thinned out the edge and then finished it up with my stone till it was shaving sharp.

All I have to do now is polish it all up and put it on a longer haft.

Still, I would be very interested to see what the kamis could do with this--especially if Yvsa (or maybe his cousin who made Rusty's hawk) did the designing for them...

Please count me in if you're making a list, Uncle Bill...

Oh, and hey Rusty, would it be possible for you to get me the exact specs of your hawk? (I would be forever indebted.)

Nice looking pieces y'all posted here!!
When I get the khukuri done and one Flute that I "owe" I will get started on making a couple of designs that will be historically accurate. And hopefully will be able to execute a pipe that will be functional.

Here is a link, if it will work, that has several different styles of 'Hawks. The forged ones are quite good.
I have one of the iron ones with the Turtle cutout. It's a nice little 'Hawk, but not for really any use except as a Dance 'Hawk or for Ceremonially Smoking.

You might also call them the Cherokee Craft and Supply Company.

During the Khukuri convention, Rusty brought his hawk in , and everyone was impressed. The way it felt in the hand put smiles on everyones faces. I like the head design with that back spike. I would like to see a longer handle if it was my personnal hawk.I hope the H.I.version has a back spike.

I would vote for a back spike, with a handle about 16 to 20 inches long. This would be a dream come true to have a hawk built like a tank as only HI can....Put me down for two or three.......

Could a pipe hawk also function as a camp tool, or would it be strictly for ceremonial purposes?

I'm not gonna give up mine with it's spike, but the pipe hawk attracts me as more balanced spiritually, combining the sacred herb tobacco and a wickedly designed fighting head. I also drool over the spontoon shape and decorations.

What I love about HI is that the kamis bless and pray over their khuks before sending them to us that they will only, as Yvsa says, "be used in a good way", and the same time build them as nearly unbreakable utility/survival farm tool that can be used as a frightful weapon, or is it the other way around?

Kind of like "Pray for peace but prepare for war".

Is anybody interested in pipe spikes, described in "King Solomon's Mine"? The tomahawk's blade had a crecent shaped blade with recurved edge, that impressed me 15 years ago.

Altough its a "pipe" spike, nobody can smoke with it! Take care!

WHOOOOOOOOAAA!!

An HI 'hawk would be awesome. My vote goes out to one with a hammer style on the back. Being a big camping guy, this would be great.

Dave

Satoshi, do you think the H.I. hawk would be legal to bring into Japan? If so, that would be cool !
smile.gif

By the way, how do you like your Gelbu Special?

18" handle, 9 1/4" head oal, 2 1/4" wide cutting edge. Cutting edge of axe to front of axe eye, 4 1/2". Spike 4 3/4", tip to eye.

:
When I get to it I think perhaps two designs would be best all around.

One being a polled 'Hawk and the other a pipe style.

Of course I could do all three and make everyone happy.
biggrin.gif

They all make a fine weapon but the first one is really the most practical.
Of course with the bunch here with HIKV, who cares about practical, right?
biggrin.gif

By making the first one a polled 'Hawk it wouldn't be that much of a transition to the pipe style, and I suppose the polled side could be forged out into a spike.
And almost anyone here could drill out the poll and make it into a pipe if they so desired. It just wouldn't be as pretty.

The biggest problem with three styles is keeping them all straight.
That would put more work on Uncle Bill and would probably confuse the kamis as well.

Let's let Uncle Bill decide which would be the best course of action. He's the one that knows and is gonna be the one putting up with all of us and trying to keep things straight.

What say Bro???

And the first one proposed by Harry is a pipe style and I think that's what he intended. That would be my pick of the bunch as well. A really good one is hard to find!!!

Anyone can buy a hatchet with a hammer head on the back side. And Crazy Crow does handle a spike style I think.
Although it may be the Spontoon style. I haven't looked in quite a while.

I'll have to agree that life would be much simpler if we at least make one style before we jump in and start making three. One step at a time. But, this is your project, bro, so shoot your best shot.

I'll need a model for this one, I know, because pix and all the words in Webster is not going to get the message across to the kamis.

For whatever it might be worth they can make a decent axe and hatchet.

Thanks very much for the info, Rusty!

I fear my mangled little drywall hammer may be a bit too small to be effective.

I'm guessing your hawk head weighs in at about 12 oz give or take. I had wanted to make an even lighter head for use in the off-hand but I may have overdone it on the miniaturization.

Maybe my "off-hand tomahawk" idea was a dumb one.

Another question to be asked: Does Nepal have anything similar in an axe or hatchet form?
