The History of Porch Generosity

So...here’s a continuing question for anyone who will indulge me.

Did the forum begin with the practice of GAW and generosity, or did that evolve?

Who were some of the original culture setters?

I gather that the forum is about 20yrs old. Just curious if the GAW has been a constant feature.

Thanks Jack Black Jack Black for that epic run down!

Gifts and GAWs are one of my favorite things on the Porch.
I've been lucky to receive several fine gifts and win a few GAWs in my short time here.
But what I enjoy the most is giving knives to people as random gifts or in one of my own GAWs.
My favorites have been the "pass it on" GAWs. I put several knives in a contest and then the winner has to choose one and then have their own contest for the remaining knives. That continues until all the knives have been given away to different members. It's so much fun. I've given away over 30 knives since I've been here... I don't miss the knives but I cherish the memories they created.

Love it!

“For it is in giving that we receive.”

“Every sunrise is an invitation for us to arise and brighten someone’s day.”

It genuinely is better to give than to receive I think :)

I have been following this thread since the start, however, since I was away for work, I couldn’t post until today.

I received a great “care package” from @cchu518. He has sent me 4 RR’s to check out a few of the different patterns, as I was just getting back into slipjoints.
I found that I like single bladed slipjoints the best, and with his blessing, the other 3 were “fileworked” by me and gifted to 3 of my 6 nephews.
Here is the one I kept and may have modified a touch. ;) Thanks, Chris! Hope you are doing well my friend, it’s been too long.

These next four Schrade OT’s I recently won in JohnDF JohnDF ‘s “tiny little GAW.” I’m pretty darn sure that is the only “raffle/giveaway” I have ever won. Lol.
These blades are so tiny and cute, so also with his blessing, I will be keeping one to remind me of his generosity and the other 3 will go to my last 3 nephews. Thank you for your generosity and willingness to ship to Canada.

During John’s giveaway, @sbh06 entered a second time on my behalf!! I didn’t even really know him. That is some serious generosity there. Thank you.:)

I agree, it is more rewarding to give than receive.

I must also say, with these selfless gifts of generosity I have received, what put a huge smile on my face, and humbled my heart, was not the knives themselves, but these members who actually thought about me specifically.

To all here who have been willing to ship things to Canada, I also have greatly appreciated that.

Excellent thread.
Here’s to us, and may we all keep “rockin” on the Porch.

That has me thinking. I’d love to see all of the past knives that people have won in GAW’s or have just gifted to each other. It could serve as a nice archive of sorts if it takes off.
Cool thread, Jon, but you've set out a Herculean task, I think! ;):thumbsup:
If you Search thread titles only in the Traditional sub-forum for "generosity", you'll find 85 threads.
If you Search thread titles only in the Traditional sub-forum for "GAW", you'll find 294 threads (and my search seems to go back only to July 2014).
So even though getting a complete "archive" of the generosity here in one thread is probably unlikely, it never hurts to have periodic reminders of the amazing gifting that seems so characteristic of The Porch.

I'll make some posts of links to threads I've started over the years to express my gratitude to BF members. Those who are interested can follow the links. I'll start with a few of my earliest such threads:

How could I forget the great GT

Gary sent me this camo Victorinox classic probably 3 years ago now and I cannot recall a day that it hasn't been with me.
It lives in my pocket organizer where it's often used but just never given much thought.
It's a faithful companion that's there when I need a pair of scissors or tweezers or small screwdriver, no matter what small multitool I may be carrying I know this is there to cover any lacking functions.

The folks here on the Porch sure are generous. This year alone I won two giveaways (for myself--I have also won some on behalf of others) and was outright gifted six knives.

I won one of the prizes in one of JohnDF JohnDF 's giveaways:

A 1984 Remington Baby Bullet (Camillus-made) lockback, with a handmade pocket sheath by John.

In another giveaway by Hickory n steel Hickory n steel , I won a 1993 Camillus-made advertising pen knife:

I love advertising knives.

I was surprised to receive this from France one day, totally unexpected:

A generous gift from @Âchillepattada, a Langres, made by Stephane Thomachot. A wonderful knife with a stag handle. Great slicer.

One day @timberweasel posted this Demo knife, asking if anyone was interested, or if the date meant anything to anyone:

Well, 1960 is the year of my birth, so I responded. He not only sent me this knife, but threw in two others:

A Thiers compact knife by Chambriard, with juniper handle,
and;

A Miguel Nieto knife with curly birch handle. Very generous and unexpected. (He also threw in a small keychain flashlight.)

And @Modoc ED sent me two knives:

A Böker trapper with smooth brown bone handle and 1095 steel, and:

A rosewood Hartshead Barlow lambsfoot ( Jack Black Jack Black SFO), to match my stag Barlow.

Unbelievable generosity for which I am very grateful. Maybe I can post more later.

Glad that one is still serving you well! :):cool:

While this was not gifted here, I wanted to add something in the nature of this thread.

My wife, who’s... not always been too keen on my knife addiction (I’ll call it what it is ), she has still supported my hobby - even if that simply means not harassing me when I buy “yet another knife”.

To my complete surprise on my birthday last year, she and the kids presented me with a Vic Cadet etched with the kids’ names.

No matter what comes my way in the future, this will always be my most cherished knife.

For the members that like the pass it on/reoccurring GAWs please check out the giveaway I'm currently running. Its amazing we have been able to keep this GAW running for 30 rounds now! I'm running the 31st giveaway of this never ending giveaway. I'm looking to get more names on the list so everyone is welcome to join up, link below. Happy Friday!
