Hey John,
Good point about choils--I like 'em too.
Thing is, with the Res-C guard and front talon configuration on Basics, when using the choil to choke up your index and middle fingers are splayed so far apart that most of the comfort advantage is lost.
When Jerry introduced the Basic 7, he incorporated a very small choil into the design. It soon became apparent to users of those Basic 7's that choking up on those knives was actually more comfortable with the smaller choil, because you could rest your finger partly on the lip of the rubber guard and partly on the talon--very comfortable without using the choil at all. Many realized at that point that choils on Basics really weren't necessary, at least for the role they most often serve--choking up.
Jerry has said that only about six percent of customers opt for no choil when both choil and no-choil options are offered. I respect that and I don't think a HOG B8 with choil would be a deal breaker for most folks who want a beefier Basic 8. That said, I do think that for many who have been enjoying Basics for years, there is a particularly compelling case to be made for increasing edge length by eliminating the choil on this size blade, without increasing length overall, especially since, for many of us, there is absolutely no downside.
Just my 2 centavos worth.
