I believe it's because the older species have more curvature in their tusks. Mastodons are more similar to elephants than mammoths and have obtuse-angled Schreger lines like elephants. So not all extinct proboscidea have acute angles, but mammoths do. Here's an in depth explanation with citations:???
Why?
Mammoths weren't extinct that long ago, and who knows about animals that are alive today. They could be gone tomorrow. Will that show for Them?
What's the difference? It must be More than they are extinct.
