THE HORROR!!!! backspring failure!!!

I have had the very same thing, it was on a Case/Bose, I went to the movies with my daughter, and I was just thumbing my knife as I watched the film ( as you do ) and I always carried it in my front right hand pocket, I got home, placed in on the bench - I went to bed, got up in the morning, and my knife was sitting exactly where I left it, with the spring hanging out in two bits-I was astounded!
I know for a fact no one touched the knife, and I know that it was in perfect order when I last used it....Case did fix it, with a note to oil the joints, which was annoying because I always feed the joints!

Just an odd thought here.

On the springs that have broken on you all, were they heavier pulls? I remember the Camillus MKL knives that we had in the army, and there was a time frame when they got notorious for breaking the springs. Later models had a lighter pull, and they stopped breaking springs. Particularly the spring that the bottle opener/screw driver was on. It could be a thumb nail breaker.

Carl.

Carl,
No the Bose was what I would call a medium pull, I can see where you are coming from with what you are saying, I suspect strongly that its be a Heat treatment thing, perhaps even the quality control of sourced steel?

I have recently experienced the same problem on a custom knife by Mike Alsdorf, I wanted to open it in order to oil it and then the spring just broke. It was not a user and very easy pull. I have noting against Mr. Alsdorf as he is great maker and heat treatment sometimes can go wrong.
I wonder if someone knows his email address.

Mike

Im curious why everyone thinks this is a heat treatment deal? HT is generally going to affect the entire part pretty evenly, yet this seems to be a point defect. If the part comes out brittle as a result of HT I suppose about the same thing happens, but it would seem noticeable in other respects, namely pull.

Thanks Gev!! I hope I hear from him soon.

I don't understand why the need to send an email etc. when the Case warranty and repair process works well enough (as in post #3).

You send the knife to the address listed on the repair request form with the competed form.
Case sends you an acknowledgement with a repair order number - if it is an out of warranty repair they also send along an invoice for you to pay.
Knife is repaired and returned to you.

I get that Stan, but an email doesn't hurt. Case got back to me right away and Skip said he wanted to see the knife before it went to the repairs department. Something to do with figuring out why it happened. I probably could have just sent it with the printed form, but i'm glad I e-mailed Mr. Lawrie, he said he wanted to look at it and he will reimburse me for my shipping cost. He also said it was covered and he would get me fixed up quick. The e-mail was really just treading water last night before I could ship it out today. I also emailed because I was worried the Case/bose stuff wasn't covered because of the limited numbers they were produced in.

Apparently case has a pretty awesome warranty. I i'll update you guys when I hear more or get it back.

That's good news, not that I ever doubted their CS. I have only used it a couple times, but they were great. Back in the day when Shirley was still working there, she would even call. Very cool

I hear the Church is going to canonize Shirley. Make her St. Shirley, the Patron Saint of Case knife fans in need of help.

Okay, not really true, but it should be!

Carl, Grand High Muckba, and Defender Of The faithful.

Sorry to hear about this and seeing the result. I think this shouldn´t happen, but it does (as well as many other bad things). I would definitelly send it back for repair / warranty. I´m sure, they´ll do it for you without a question or at least any problem.... :(

I guess when you open a blade - in relation to the length of the spring, its where the main point of stress is at on the spring - sure the spring will even out the stress to a small degree, but there will be a main focus on stress on a specified point of the spring whilst opening the blade.

If you do an extensive search on this forum you will find another example of a C/B having this issue. I don't remember the specifics but you can be assured Case will make it right. Make sure you tell them you want the correct steel used and not a substitute. TB knives are given quite a bit of consideration. Rightfully so!

I had a back spring failure on a knife i totally fell in love with .
A rock creek tortugas . Took it back to my local knife shop where i purchased it and they gave me a new one
Three days later it happened again !!!!
Luckily i have a awesome shop and they did me kind part trade for a dragonfly zdp.
Never got another rock creek .
I feel your pain man .

Hey, didn't we discuss that Robert Mitchum film in another thread! :D

Carl.

Only experience I have of this was on a Belgian Army clasp knife from the late 50's. That certainly had a heavy pull.

Thanks for the emotional support in these difficult time everyone.....:p Really though, I know this stuff happens. I work with metal and i've seen material do strange stuff. The knife has been sent to case Care of Skip Lawrie (thanks Gev) and they have been very apologetic and prompt to this point. I just hope the level of fit and finish is on par with what I sent them, I lucked out in getting an almost custom quality example... But Case hasn't given me a reason to doubt them yet!

You can't beat a phone call or at least an email, pre-mailing of any knife for warranty repair. It also lets you feel good about sending off your baby into the cruel world.........

Hey guys, Because a few people seemed to be interested in this thread, im going to update. Cases customer service is super, I sent the knife to them on tuesday. I cant wait to see the end product. This is the e-mail that the very helpful Skip Lawrie sent me...

Eric,

Your knife arrived today and it has been repaired in the Model Shop. I am going to “cycle” it a couple times to see if there could be an issue with the replaced spring/tang.

I have asked that the old spring be given to Engineering for analysis.

I will be back in touch,

Skip
