The idiot's guide to the AR-15 rifle (or an idiot building one)

I have 5 ARs that haven't been cleaned in more than 2 years. One of them has had just over 2500 rounds through it in that time. I just keep adding Slip2000 EWL and they just keep running.

I see no reason to clean off the protective layer of carbon build up. :)

Matthew, have you used BreakFree CLP yet. I just started using it and so far I'm impressed. It is a cleaner, lubricant and preservative. It also has a wide temperature range that it operates in. It is a little expensive, but well worth it so far in my opinion.

BF CLP does a better job of cleaning. Also works better then some other (clps) as a protectant for extended periods (even after drying). Lubes fine but will dry off in time. It is not the slickest stuff out there. BF CLP works great for all of the guns I have ever ran across.

Slip 2000 EWL works best as a lube. It is a clp and does not dry out but does not do as well for cleaning and protecting. It is however slicker than hot snot. I use it on BCG, inside of the upper, buffer, and tube. That is it though. BF CLP on everything else for its better protecting abilities.

Clp type lube testing here

I used CLP for years and found it lacking.

CLICKBANGBANG is right on with his assessment of Slip200 EWL compared to CLP. There is no comparison. BF CLP has been surpassed in a big way.

CLP evaporates too quickly. It runs too much. It isn't as slick as other lubes and it really doesn't do anything that Slip2000 EWL does for me.

Just bumping this to the top since it was moved from another subforum - everyone enjoy this excellent resource!

Is that Slip stuff all that much better than Mobil 1 synthetic?

While it is not my build, it was at one point some one elses. I passed up on a SBR 10.5" AR with a free float quad rail, Adams Arms piston kit, Miad grip, CTR stock, 6 colt AR mags with ranger plates, 5 Pmags w/ window, front and rear Troy battlesights, all that for around $1250 before tax stamp, I canceled it today, just got a new car so no new toys for right now, plus I have my AK to keep me happy.

Oh and a sweet JP enterprise trigger.

I feel the need to drive down to Texas and slap you. ;) That rifle would be illegal in NY on so many levels.

BWSkipper....AR conversion kits suffer from a couple of problems in terms of accuracy...long jump to rifling , wrong twist rate (.22lr usually around 1/16) and slightly smaller diameter bullets (.22lr around .222 and most 5.56 are .224)....I bought a CMMG drop in unit for some barricade transition work (Kyle's Highsmith rifle drill) before the Ft Benning 3 gun match the last two years, and shot about 1500 rounds of .22lr through it... the accuracy was not great (about 4inches at 50 yards), but acceptable for the steel target I was shooting at 35y. The first year, the gun was pretty gunked up at the end of the practice sessions, and the second year I removed the gas tube, and covered the gas port with a stainless screw clamp... a whole lot better.... I just built a dedicated upper with the CMMG 1/16 barrel and adapter... the chamber insert from the drop in is replaced with a feed ramp adapter, and it mates to a dedicated .22lr barrel with a reduced diameter at the chamber... very accurate for the initial test at 35y... shooting a 6moa Trijicon reflex 1x sight I got 3/8 inch groups at 35y....I shoot at a private range and do not have to worry about having a bolt hold open

I'm researching triggers for an upcoming AR build, anyone have an AR Gold trigger by American Trigger corp. ?
Or the Wilson Combat trigger, either single or two stage ?

And how do they compare to other triggers.

I am however thinking of going with the Rock River two stage to save money on the build and maybe later drop in an AR Gold trigger.

dmonay... my game gun and backup both have Rock River triggers, bought when there was a discount at Brownells.... installed a Geissele in a friend's rifle last night.. pricey but adjustable for first and second stage..I like the Garand style catch/release disconnector type like the RRA to preclude the long hammer fall before the trigger engages the sear notch when released by the disconnector.... the adjustable traditional triggers lighten to the point they double after a couple of years of competition (I was shooting 1500- 2000 rounds /year at that time)

magpul od green items, spike tactical buffer & spring, timberwolf lpk, magpul single sling ring/end plate. I have my eye on a Colt or DD carbine upper

I know this post is pretty old, but I was searching Google for some good pics of OD green Magpul furniture and this pic cought my eye. I noticed the ESEE logo on the side of your lower. That is sweet! How can I get that on my lower? I carry a ESEE-6 on my vest. Love ESEE knives!

Nice! The resurrection of one of my favorite threads! KutCha, TTD's photos inspired me to deck my AR out in Magpul OD Green as well (Post #612 in this thread).

Since last I posted here, I installed an EOTech EXPS2 holo sight and got rid of the Troy fixed rear BUIS (couldn't get it to stay seated properly after firing multiple rounds. Decided to do the rear sight thing right and recently mounted a LMT rear sight. Sorry for the crappy cell phone picture
