The Jani-Song is on the horizon!

Thanks for the link. I like this a lot. I still have a cheap butterfly knife kicking around here from my childhood. They're fun and the design of the Jani-Song is unique and very cool.

This is great news indeed. I have loosely kept in touch with Mr. Janich over the years just for the Jani-song. I spoke with him a few times at the Blade Show as well. Prior to the 2011 Blade Show or so (might have been 2010), Mr. Janich said he would bring his Jani-song to the show so that I could have a look at it since I've hounded him over the years to get it into production. He agreed, but forgot at the last minute. I saw him at the show, and he was extremely apologetic and offered to mail it to me for a week to play with. Sure enough a couple days after the show ended, I get a package in the mail with the Jani-song. I was able to handle it for a week. Needless to say, I'm very excited to hear this news. I'll see if I can dig up some more information.

EDIT: Because of his kindness, before I sent the knife back, I put a mirror polished edge on it.

It is nice to see that Spyderco might be resurrecting one of the great lost knife designs. I hope the Jani-song finally emerges.

Fingers cossed that the Jani-song goes into production what a cool blade to own.

It looks like it functions like a Barry Wood folder. Are they similar?

Harkamus,

I am envious, since I was only able to flip the Jani-song at the Spyderco booth for a few minutes (I wrote the BladeBarrelBezel.com article linked by the OP). I can only imagine how the knife would have monopolized my life for a week. I think it is an outstanding bit of design by Mr. Janich. Maybe with your connection, you could get us an approximate time we could see them in production...

Thank you for joining us on bladeforums.

This is how I came into contact with Mr. Janich. I used to indirectly help with Darrel Ralph at the Bladeshow booths. I mentioned to Darrel once how awesome it would be to get a license to use Janich's Jani-song mechanism in a DDR knife. I told Darrel how I had messaged Mr. Janich a few times a year around Bladeshow time to see if he's made progress with getting the knife into prototyping or production phase. Darrel kind of loosely listened in one ear being the man of action he is. And since we had this conversation at Bladeshow one year, he simply walked me over to the Spyderco booth and introduced me to Michael Janich. I told Michael that I was the guy sending him messages over the years, and so we just started talking. It wasn't until the next Bladeshow where I would end up getting the privilege to play with a Jani-song for a week.

I will see what information I can dig up unless of course whatever I find out is something I'm not allowed to mention. In that case I'll just say if it is or isn't coming in the future.

EDIT: I'm most excited that based on your article and my time with the Jani-song, that most of the original design was kept intact, down to the coffin handle and the spear point blade.

Got a bit more info, but waiting to get the green light to share it. Also, what he told me led to my asking him a few more questions. We shall see.

The information that I gathered based on a dealer that attended Shot Show is such. The prototype was manufactured in Taiwan. Spyderco doesn't have capacity in the US factories to produce these. The basic plan is for Taiwan to produce the Jani-song for sale internationally, but not for US importation. Production hasn't started in Taiwan, nor does anyone know if or when. But if it does, then Taiwan will make these. Some people in the US will probably be able to get a hold of a few of these if production begins, but they will be very rare on this side of the pond.

I picked up one of the original Blackhawk Blades Jani-Songs from Mike at Martial Blade Camp 2009. He included a personalized certificate of authenticity and a DVD detailing the use and maipulation of the Jani-Song. It's a great design and a true, "Yo-Yo for knife guys", as Mike has said.

Wow. I am so envious. There were only about 50 pieces made. I know Mike owns one. Sal owns one too. The rest were sold to dealers at Shows with a few left that he sold at Martial Blade Camps, I think.

True, as DavidZ pointed out up above, but I love the handle profile on Michael Janich's version. That plus Spyderco's F&F/value :)
