Hey ; could some one please find out if GSakai still sells the Plain edge Vg-10 stainless steel handled Spyderco Harpy. Some people are saying that they are no longer being made. Is this true? I knew that they were discontinued from the US a long time ago. But until 2009 they were still being made for the Japanese market. As of 2014 does GSakai still sell them ? I appreciate your help

Oh ! C'mon ! Its TRUE. I love Spydercos. And l love The Harpy. And l admire the Hannibal films. But l am NOT a cannibal. I'm sure at least some people buy hollow handle survival knives by seeing Rambo.
I'm sure a lot of people buy swiss army knives by seeing Macguyver. I'm sure at least 50% of the knife lovers who watched Crocodile Dundee wanted to buy a bowie knife.
BTW do you have any knowledge about the GSakai question ?

But l am NOT a cannibal.

*sarcasm*
That's exactly what a cannibal would want us to think to make us drop our guard.

But in all seriousness good luck on finding the knife, I wish I could offer you some advice on how to track one down but I know nothing about it. Post on the spyderco sub-forum you have a lot more knowledgeable spyderco fans there who are pretty active and should be able to point you in the right direction.

Just keep patient and hopefully you get a hold of that knife. All good things to those who wait.

Hey ; could some one please tell me about the VG-10 stainless steel Handled spyderco Harpy which was sold by GSakai in Japan for the Japanese market ? I know that the PE Harpy was discontinued in the US a long time ago. But.l also know that GSakai in Japan has kept selling them as recently as 2009. As of 2014 are the PE SS VG-10 Harpys still sold by GSakai. A lot of people are saying that they are no.longer sold by GSakai. Is this true? I really appreciate your assistance.

The best you're going to be able to do is getting
a serrated Harpy and paying someone to grind them of into a plain edge

Have you logged into their website and tried to email them? They do speak English and I'm sure they would be willing to help out. In cases like this (with obscure models) it is always best to go directly to the source.

G.Sakai is one of our makers in Seki. They are also our distributor in Japan. They will often keep inventory for the Japanese market which prefers plain edges,

I would never mutilate my beloved serrated Harpy by re grinding it. And l did email GSakai. Been a month. They didn't respond

To start with ; let me just say it is a privilege to have my question so swiftly answered by the president of the finest American knife company.I love your Hawkbills.
Just 1 question though.
Is that particular model ( Harpy C08P) still currently being made ? I.know a lot of the American.models are made with that PE variant in Japan.but is the C08P still being sold by GSakai or has he stopped?

Sorry to say I don't know for sure. :o

I would guess that he still has them available.

Mr. Glesser;
Why was the plain edge Harpy discontinued anyway. Seems like a very strong design. I own a SE Harpy and it's so good that l EDC it for the last 7 months. I know at least 30 guys and gals who would go to any.length for a plain edge Harpy . So why did Spyderco Discontinue the Plain Edge Harpy ?

When sales do not maintain a certain level, we disco the model to make room for new models. We often bring them back as a sprint to serve those that are still interested. This "rule" is not adhered to for models that serve our military and law inforcement personnel. Hawkbills in general are not a large market, and the Harpy was designed for cutting nets (rope) and the serrated edge is preferred. The knife has also been used more than a few times to cut free a fisherman caught in a line and in danger of going overboard.
